1And Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her to the city of David, until he had finished building his house, and the house of YHWH, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2Only the people were sacrificing at the high places, because no house had been built for the name of YHWH until those days.
3And Solomon loved YHWH, to walk in the statutes (chuqqot) of David his father; only at the high places he was sacrificing and offering incense.
4And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place; a thousand burnt-offerings did Solomon offer up upon that altar.
5In Gibeon YHWH appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask what I shall give to you."
6And Solomon said, "You have done with your servant David my father great kindness, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you; and you have kept for him this great kindness, and have given to him a son sitting on his throne, as it is this day.
7And now, YHWH my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father; and I am a little lad; I do not know how to go out or to come in.
8And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
9And you shall give to your servant a hearing heart to judge your people, to discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this your weighty people?"
10And the thing was good in the eyes of my Lord (Adonai), that Solomon had asked this thing.
11And God said to him, "Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself many days, neither have asked for yourself riches, nor have asked the soul (nephesh) of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to hear judgment (mishpat),
12behold, I have done according to your words; behold, I have given to you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has been none like you before you, and after you none shall arise like you.
13And also that which you have not asked I have given to you, both riches and honor, so that there has not been any like you, a man (ish) among the kings, all your days.
14And if you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes (chuqqim) and my commandments (mitzvot), as David your father walked, then I will lengthen your days."
15And Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream; and he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant (berit) of my Lord (Adonai), and offered up burnt-offerings, and made peace-offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.
16Then there came two women, harlots, to the king, and they stood before him.
17And the one woman said, "Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I gave birth with her in the house.
18And it came to pass on the third day after my giving birth, that this woman also gave birth; and we were together, there was no stranger with us in the house, except the two of us in the house.
19And the son of this woman died in the night, because she lay upon it.
20And she arose in the midst of the night, and took my son from beside me, while your handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom.
21And I rose in the morning to nurse my son, and behold, it was dead; but I looked closely at it in the morning, and behold, it was not my son whom I had borne."
22And the other woman said, "No, but the living (chai) is my son, and the dead is your son." And this one said, "No, but the dead is your son, and the living is my son." Thus they spoke before the king.
23And the king said, "This one says, 'This is my son the living (chai), and your son is the dead'; and that one says, 'No, but your son is the dead, and my son is the living.'"
24And the king said, "Take for me a sword." And they brought the sword before the king.
25And the king said, "Cut the living (chai) child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other."
26And the woman whose son was the living (chai) one said to the king, for her compassions were kindled over her son, and she said, "Oh, my lord, give to her the living child, and by no means put it to death." But the other said, "Let it be neither mine nor yours; cut it."
27And the king answered and said, "Give to her the living (chai) child, and by no means put it to death; she is its mother."
28And all Israel heard of the judgment (mishpat) which the king had judged; and they feared before the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was within him, to do judgment (mishpat).
