1And Samuel said to Saul, "YHWH sent me to anoint you as king over his people, over Israel; and now hear the voice of the words of YHWH.
2Thus says YHWH of hosts (tzevaot): I have taken note of what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way when he came up from Egypt.
3Now go, and you shall strike Amalek, and devote to destruction all that he has, and you shall not have pity on him; and you shall put to death from man (ish) to woman (ishah), from child to nursing infant, from ox to sheep, from camel to donkey."
4And Saul mustered the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers, and ten thousand men (ish) of Judah.
5And Saul came to the city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.
6And Saul said to the Kenite, "Go, depart, go down from the midst of the Amalekite, lest I sweep you away with him; for you showed kindness with all the sons of Israel when they came up from Egypt." And the Kenite departed from the midst of Amalek.
7And Saul struck Amalek from Havilah as you come to Shur, which is opposite Egypt.
8And he captured Agag the king of Amalek alive (chai), and all the people he devoted to destruction by the mouth of the sword.
9But Saul and the people had pity on Agag, and on the best of the sheep, and the oxen, and the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and they were not willing to devote them to destruction; but every thing despised and feeble, that they devoted to destruction.
10And the word of YHWH came to Samuel, saying:
11"I repent that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from after me and has not carried out my words." And it burned to Samuel, and he cried out to YHWH all the night.
12And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told to Samuel, saying, "Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up for himself a monument, and he turned and passed on and went down to Gilgal."
13And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, "Blessed are you to YHWH; I have carried out the word of YHWH."
14And Samuel said, "And what is this voice of the sheep in my ears, and the voice of the oxen which I hear?"
15And Saul said, "They have brought them from the Amalekite, because the people had pity on the best of the sheep and the oxen, in order to sacrifice to YHWH your God; and the rest we have devoted to destruction."
16And Samuel said to Saul, "Cease, and let me tell you what YHWH spoke to me this night." And he said to him, "Speak."
17And Samuel said, "Is it not so—though you were small in your own eyes, you became head of the tribes of Israel? And YHWH anointed you king over Israel.
18And YHWH sent you on a way, and said, 'Go and devote to destruction the sinners, Amalek, and fight against them until they are consumed.'
19And why did you not hear the voice of YHWH, but you flew upon the spoil and did the evil in the eyes of YHWH?"
20And Saul said to Samuel, "I have heard the voice of YHWH, and I have gone in the way which YHWH sent me, and I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and Amalek I have devoted to destruction.
21And the people took from the spoil, sheep and oxen, the choicest of the devoted thing, to sacrifice to YHWH your God in Gilgal."
22And Samuel said, "Does YHWH have delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in hearing the voice of YHWH? Behold, to hear is better than sacrifice, to give heed than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is the sin of divination, and stubbornness is iniquity and teraphim. Because you have rejected the word of YHWH, he has rejected you from being king."
24And Saul said to Samuel, "I have sinned, for I have transgressed the mouth of YHWH and your words; because I feared the people and heard their voice.
25And now, take away my sin, please, and return with me, that I may bow down to YHWH."
26And Samuel said to Saul, "I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of YHWH, and YHWH has rejected you from being king over Israel."
27And Samuel turned to go, and he seized the corner of his robe, and it tore.
28And Samuel said to him, "YHWH has torn the kingdom of Israel from upon you this day, and has given it to your neighbor who is better than you.
29And also the Eternal of Israel will not lie and will not repent; for he is not a man (adam) that he should repent."
30And he said, "I have sinned; now honor me, please, before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may bow down to YHWH your God."
31And Samuel returned after Saul; and Saul bowed down to YHWH.
32And Samuel said, "Bring near to me Agag the king of Amalek." And Agag came to him cheerfully. And Agag said, "Surely the bitterness of death has turned aside."
33And Samuel said, "As your sword has made women (ishah) childless, so shall your mother be childless among women (ishah)." And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before YHWH in Gilgal.
34And Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house, to Gibeah of Saul.
35And Samuel did not again see Saul until the day of his death, for Samuel mourned for Saul; and YHWH repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
