1And the Philistines gathered their camps for battle, and they were gathered at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.
2And Saul and the men (ish) of Israel were gathered, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and arranged battle to meet the Philistines.
3And the Philistines were standing on the mountain on this side, and Israel standing on the mountain on that side, and the valley between them.
4And a man (ish) of the middle-space went out from the camps of the Philistines, Goliath his name, from Gath; his height was six cubits and a span.
5And a helmet of bronze was on his head, and with a coat of scale-armor he was clothed; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze.
6And a greave of bronze was upon his legs, and a javelin of bronze between his shoulders.
7And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and the blade of his spear was six hundred shekels of iron; and the bearer of the shield was walking before him.
8And he stood and called to the armies of Israel, and said to them, "Why do you come out to arrange battle? Am not I the Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose for yourselves a man (ish), and let him come down to me.
9If he is able to fight with me and strike me, then we will be servants to you; but if I prevail over him and strike him, then you shall be servants to us, and you shall serve (avad) us."
10And the Philistine said, "I have defied the armies of Israel this day; give me a man (ish), and let us fight together."
11And Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, and they were dismayed and feared greatly.
12And David was the son of this Ephrathite man (ish) from Bethlehem of Judah, and his name was Jesse; and he had eight sons. And the man (ish) in the days of Saul was old, advanced among men (ish).
13And the three eldest sons of Jesse went; they walked after Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and his second Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
14And David, he was the youngest; and the three eldest walked after Saul.
15And David was going and returning from upon Saul to shepherd the flock of his father at Bethlehem.
16And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
17And Jesse said to David his son, "Take now for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves of bread, and run them to the camp to your brothers.
18And these ten cuts of cheese you shall bring to the captain of the thousand; and your brothers you shall visit for welfare, and take their pledge.
19And Saul, and they, and all the men (ish) of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines."
20And David rose early in the morning, and left the flock with a keeper, and lifted up and went, as Jesse commanded (tzivvah) him; and he came to the encampment, and the army was going out to the battle-array, and they shouted for the battle.
21And Israel and the Philistines arranged battle-array to meet battle-array.
22And David left the baggage from upon him in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the battle-array, and came and asked his brothers of welfare.
23And he was speaking with them, and behold, the man (ish) of the middle-space was coming up, Goliath the Philistine his name, from Gath, from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to these same words, and David heard.
24And every man (ish) of Israel, when they saw the man (ish), fled from before him, and feared greatly.
25And the men (ish) of Israel said, "Have you seen this man (ish) who is coming up? For to defy Israel he is coming up; and it shall be, the man (ish) who strikes him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel."
26And David said to the men (ish) who were standing with him, saying, "What shall be done for the man (ish) who strikes that Philistine, and removes the reproach from upon Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he has defied the armies of the living (chai) God?"
27And the people said to him according to this word, saying, "Thus shall it be done for the man (ish) who strikes him."
28And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men (ish); and the anger of Eliab burned against David, and he said, "Why is it that you have come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart; for to see the battle you have come down."
29And David said, "What have I done now? Was it not but a word?"
30And he turned about from beside him toward another, and spoke according to this same word; and the people answered him a word according to the former word.
31And the words which David spoke were heard, and they told them before Saul; and he took him.
32And David said to Saul, "Let no man's (adam) heart fall because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine."
33And Saul said to David, "You are not able to go to this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man (ish) of war from his youth."
34And David said to Saul, "Your servant was shepherding for his father among the flock, and the lion came, and the bear, and carried off a sheep from the flock;
35And I went out after him, and struck him, and delivered it from his mouth; and he rose against me, and I seized by his beard, and struck him, and killed him.
36Both the lion and the bear your servant has struck; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living (chai) God."
37And David said, "YHWH, who delivered me from the hand of the lion and from the hand of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." And Saul said to David, "Go, and YHWH be with you."
38And Saul clothed David with his garments, and put a helmet of bronze upon his head, and clothed him with a coat of mail.
39And David girded his sword over his garments, and tried to go, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, "I am not able to go with these, for I have not tested them." And David put them off from upon him.
40And he took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag which he had, and in the pouch; and his sling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistine.
41And the Philistine went, walking and drawing near to David; and the man (ish) bearing the shield was before him.
42And the Philistine looked, and saw David, and despised him; for he was a youth, and ruddy, with beautiful appearance.
43And the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with staffs?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44And the Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh (basar) to the birds of the heavens and to the beasts of the field."
45And David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with sword, and with spear, and with javelin; but I come to you in the name of YHWH of hosts (tzevaot), the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
46This day YHWH will deliver you up into my hand, and I will strike you, and remove your head from upon you; and I will give the carcass of the camp of the Philistines this day to the birds of the heavens and to the beasts (chai) of the earth; and all the earth shall know that there is a God for Israel.
47And all this assembly shall know that not by sword and by spear does YHWH save (yasha); for the battle is YHWH's, and He will give you into our hand."
48And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and went and drew near to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the battle-array to meet the Philistine.
49And David sent his hand to the bag, and took from there a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead; and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the earth.
50And David prevailed over the Philistine with the sling and with the stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him; and there was no sword in the hand of David.
51And David ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it from its sheath, and killed him, and cut off with it his head. And the Philistines saw that their mighty one was dead, and they fled.
52And the men (ish) of Israel and Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines until your coming to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the slain of the Philistines fell on the way of Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron.
53And the children of Israel returned from hotly pursuing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camps.
54And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but his weapons he put in his tent (ohel).
55And when Saul saw David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, captain of the host, "Whose son is this youth, Abner?" And Abner said, "By the life (chai) of your soul (nephesh), O king, I do not know."
56And the king said, "Ask, you, whose son the young man is."
57And as David returned from striking the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
58And Saul said to him, "Whose son are you, young man?" And David said, "The son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite."
