1And Hannah prayed and said: "My heart exults in YHWH, my horn is exalted in YHWH; my mouth is enlarged over my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation (yeshuah).
2There is none holy as YHWH, for there is none besides you; and there is no rock like our God.
3Do not multiply to speak proudly, proudly; let not arrogance go out of your mouth; for a God of knowledge is YHWH, and by him deeds are weighed.
4The bow of the mighty men is shattered, and those who stumbled are girded with strength.
5The full have hired themselves out for bread, and the hungry have ceased; until the barren has borne seven, and she of many sons languishes.
6YHWH kills and makes alive (chai); he brings down to Sheol and brings up.
7YHWH makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he also lifts up.
8He raises up from the dust (aphar) the poor, from the dunghill he lifts up the needy, to seat them with nobles; and a throne of glory he gives them to inherit. For to YHWH are the pillars of the earth, and he has set the world upon them.
9The feet of his faithful ones he keeps, but the wicked are silenced in darkness; for not by strength does a man (ish) prevail.
10YHWH—those who contend with him are shattered; against them in the heavens he thunders; YHWH judges the ends of the earth, and he gives strength to his king and exalts the horn of his anointed.
11And Elkanah went to Ramah, to his house; and the boy was ministering to YHWH before the face of Eli the priest.
12And the sons of Eli were sons of belial; they did not know YHWH.
13And the custom (mishpat) of the priests with the people was: every man (ish) sacrificing a sacrifice, the priest's servant would come, while the flesh (basar) was boiling, with a three-toothed fork in his hand;
14and he would strike into the pan, or the kettle, or the cauldron, or the pot; all that the fork brought up, the priest would take with it. So they did to all Israel who came there in Shiloh.
15Also before they would make the fat smoke, the priest's servant would come and say to the man (ish) sacrificing: "Give flesh (basar) to roast for the priest, for he will not take from you boiled flesh (basar), but raw (chai)."
16And the man (ish) would say to him: "Let them surely make the fat smoke today, then take for yourself as your soul (nephesh) desires"; and he would say: "No, but now you shall give it, and if not, I will take it by force."
17And the sin of the young men was very great before the face of YHWH, for the men (ish) despised the offering of YHWH.
18But Samuel was ministering before the face of YHWH, a boy girded with a linen ephod.
19And a small robe his mother would make for him, and bring it up to him from days to days, when she came up with her husband (ish) to sacrifice the sacrifice of the days.
20And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife (ishah), and say: "May YHWH set for you seed from this woman (ishah) in place of the petition which was asked for YHWH." And they would go to his place.
21For YHWH visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew up with YHWH.
22Now Eli was very old, and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women (ishah) who served at the entrance of the tent (ohel) of appointed time (moed).
23And he said to them: "Why do you do things like these? For I hear of your evil deeds from all this people.
24No, my sons; for it is not good, the report which I hear; you make the people of YHWH transgress.
25If a man (ish) sins against a man (ish), God shall judge him; but if against YHWH a man (ish) sins, who shall pray for him?" But they did not listen to the voice of their father, for YHWH desired to put them to death.
26And the boy Samuel was going on and growing and was good, both with YHWH and also with men (ish).
27And a man (ish) of God came to Eli and said to him: "Thus says YHWH: Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father, when they were in Egypt, to the house of Pharaoh?
28And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be a priest for me, to go up on my altar, to make incense smoke, to bear an ephod before me? And I gave to the house of your father all the fire-offerings of the children of Israel.
29Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering which I commanded (tzivvah) for the dwelling? And you honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat from the best of all the offerings of Israel, my people.
30Therefore declares YHWH, the God of Israel: I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before me forever; but now declares YHWH: Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
31Behold, days are coming, and I will cut off your arm and the arm of the house of your father, so that there will not be an old man in your house.
32And you shall look upon a foe in the dwelling, in all the good which he does for Israel; and there shall not be an old man in your house all the days.
33And a man (ish) of yours I will not cut off from my altar, to make your eyes fail and to grieve your soul (nephesh); but all the increase of your house shall die as men (ish).
34And this is for you the sign (ot): that which will come to your two sons, to Hophni and Phinehas—in one day the two of them shall die.
35And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and in my soul (nephesh); and I will build for him a sure house, and he shall walk before my anointed all the days.
36And it shall come to pass, that everyone who is left in your house shall come to bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and shall say: "Attach me, please, to one of the priestly offices, to eat a morsel of bread."
