1And it came to pass, when the kingdom of Rehoboam was established, and as he grew strong, he forsook the Torah of YHWH, and all Israel with him.
2And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem — because they had acted treacherously against YHWH —
3with a thousand and two hundred chariots, and sixty thousand horsemen; and there was no number to the people who came with him out of Egypt: Lubim, Sukkiim, and Cushites.
4And he captured the fortified cities that were Judah's, and came as far as Jerusalem.
5And Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the princes of Judah who were gathered to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, "Thus says YHWH: You have forsaken me, and so I also have forsaken you into the hand of Shishak."
6And the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves, and said, "YHWH is righteous."
7And when YHWH saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of YHWH came to Shemaiah, saying, "They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but I will grant them a little deliverance, and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.
8For they shall be servants to him, that they may know my service (avodah) and the service (avodah) of the kingdoms of the lands."
9And Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took the treasures of the house of YHWH, and the treasures of the house of the king; he took everything; and he took the shields of gold that Solomon had made.
10And king Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze, and committed them to the hand of the commanders of the runners, who guarded the entrance of the king's house.
11And it came to pass, as often as the king came into the house of YHWH, the runners came and bore them, and brought them back to the chamber of the runners.
12And when he humbled himself, the anger of YHWH turned from him, so as not to destroy him completely; and also in Judah there were good things.
13And king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned; for Rehoboam was a son of forty-one years when he began to reign, and seventeen years he reigned in Jerusalem, the city that YHWH had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there; and his mother's name was Naamah the Ammonitess.
14And he did the evil, because he did not set his heart to seek YHWH.
15And the acts of Rehoboam, the first and the last, are they not written in the words of Shemaiah the prophet and Iddo the seer, for genealogy? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days.
16And Rehoboam lay with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David; and Abijah his son reigned in his place.
