1And the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, "Behold now, the place where we are dwelling before you is too narrow for us.
2Let us go now to the Jordan, and let us take from there each man (ish) one beam, and let us make for ourselves there a place to dwell there." And he said, "Go."
3And the one said, "Be pleased now, and go with your servants." And he said, "I myself will go."
4And he went with them; and they came to the Jordan, and they cut down the trees.
5And it came to pass, as the one was felling the beam, that the iron fell into the water; and he cried out and said, "Alas, my master! for it was borrowed."
6And the man (ish) of God said, "Where did it fall?" And he showed him the place. And he cut off a stick, and cast it there, and made the iron to float.
7And he said, "Lift it up for yourself." And he put out his hand and took it.
8Now the king of Aram was warring against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, "At such-and-such a place shall be my camp."
9And the man (ish) of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, "Beware of passing by this place, for there the Arameans are coming down."
10And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man (ish) of God told him and warned him of; and he guarded himself there, not once nor twice.
11And the heart of the king of Aram was stormed over this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, "Will you not tell me who of us is for the king of Israel?"
12And one of his servants said, "No, my master the king; but Elisha the prophet who is in Israel tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedchamber."
13And he said, "Go and see where he is, that I may send and take him." And it was told to him, saying, "Behold, he is in Dothan."
14And he sent there horses and chariots and a heavy force; and they came by night and surrounded the city.
15And the attendant of the man (ish) of God rose early to arise, and he went out, and behold, a force surrounding the city, with horse and chariot. And his young man said to him, "Alas, my master! how shall we do?"
16And he said, "Fear not, for more are those who are with us than those who are with them."
17And Elisha prayed and said, "YHWH, open now his eyes, that he may see." And YHWH opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
18And they came down to him, and Elisha prayed to YHWH and said, "Smite now this nation with blindness." And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
19And Elisha said to them, "This is not the way, neither is this the city; come after me, and I will bring you to the man (ish) whom you seek." And he led them to Samaria.
20And it came to pass, when they came into Samaria, that Elisha said, "YHWH, open the eyes of these that they may see." And YHWH opened their eyes, and they saw, and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.
21And the king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, "Shall I smite them, shall I smite them, my father?"
22And he said, "You shall not smite. Would you smite those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master."
23And he prepared for them a great feast, and they ate and drank; and he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the bands of Aram came no more into the land of Israel.
24And it came to pass after this, that Ben-hadad king of Aram gathered all his camp, and went up and besieged Samaria.
25And there was a great famine in Samaria, and behold, they were besieging it, until a donkey's head was for eighty pieces of silver, and a fourth of a kab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver.
26And it came to pass, as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, that a woman (ishah) cried to him, saying, "Save (yasha), my master the king!"
27And he said, "Let not YHWH save (yasha) you; from where shall I save (yasha) you? from the threshing floor or from the winepress?"
28And the king said to her, "What ails you?" And she said, "This woman (ishah) said to me, 'Give your son, that we may eat him today, and my son we will eat tomorrow.'
29So we boiled my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, 'Give your son, that we may eat him'; but she hid her son."
30And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman (ishah), that he tore his garments—and he was passing by upon the wall—and the people saw, and behold, the sackcloth was upon his flesh (basar) within.
31And he said, "So may God do to me, and so may he add, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day."
32Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him; and the king sent a man (ish) from before him. Before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, "Do you see that this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? See, when the messenger comes, shut the door and press him with the door. Is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?"
33While he was yet speaking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him; and he said, "Behold, this evil is from YHWH; why should I wait for YHWH any longer?"
