1And it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the smiting of the Amalekites, that David dwelt in Ziklag two days.
2And it came to pass on the third day, that behold, a man (ish) came from the camp, from Saul, and his garments were torn, and ground (adamah) was upon his head; and it came to pass, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth and prostrated himself.
3And David said to him, "From where do you come?" And he said to him, "From the camp of Israel I have escaped."
4And David said to him, "What was the thing? Tell me, please." And he said, "The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people fell and died; and also Saul and Jonathan his son died."
5And David said to the young man who told him, "How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?"
6And the young man who told him said, "By chance I happened upon Mount Gilboa, and behold, Saul was leaning upon his spear; and behold, the chariots and the masters of the horsemen pressed hard after him.
7And he turned behind him and saw me, and called to me. And I said, 'Here am I.'
8And he said to me, 'Who are you?' And I said to him, 'An Amalekite am I.'
9And he said to me, 'Stand, please, over me and put me to death, for the agony has seized me, for my whole soul (nephesh) is yet in me.'
10So I stood over him and put him to death, for I knew that he would not live after his falling; and I took the crown that was upon his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord."
11And David took hold on his garments and tore them; and likewise all the men (ish) who were with him.
12And they mourned and wept and fasted until the evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of YHWH and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13And David said to the young man who told him, "From where are you?" And he said, "The son of a man (ish), a sojourner, an Amalekite am I."
14And David said to him, "How were you not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the anointed of YHWH?"
15And David called to one of the young men and said, "Approach, fall upon him." And he smote him, and he died.
16And David said to him, "Your blood be upon your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, I have put to death the anointed of YHWH."
17And David lamented this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son,
18and said—to teach the sons of Judah the bow; behold, it is written upon the book of Jashar:
19The beauty, O Israel, upon your high places is slain! How are the mighty fallen!
20Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.
21Mountains in Gilboa, let there be no dew and no rain upon you, nor fields of offerings; for there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.
22From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back, and the sword of Saul did not return empty.
23Saul and Jonathan, the beloved and the pleasant in their lives (chai), and in their death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
24Daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet with delights, who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.
25How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan upon your high places is slain!
26I am distressed over you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant you were to me; your love was wonderful to me, more than the love of women (ishah).
27How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
