1And YHWH sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and said to him, "There were two men (ish) in one city: the one rich, and the other poor.
2The rich one had flocks and herds, very many.
3But the poor one had nothing except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought; and he kept it alive, and it grew up together with him and with his sons; from his morsel it would eat, and from his cup it would drink, and in his bosom it would lie, and it was to him like a daughter.
4And a traveler came to the rich man (ish), and he spared to take from his own flock and from his own herd, to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him; and he took the poor man's (ish) ewe lamb, and prepared it for the man (ish) who had come to him."
5And David's anger burned greatly against the man (ish), and he said to Nathan, "As YHWH lives (chai), surely the man (ish) who has done this is a son of death,
6and the ewe lamb he shall repay fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity."
7And Nathan said to David, "You are the man (ish). Thus says YHWH, the God of Israel: I anointed you for king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul,
8and I gave to you the house of your lord, and the wives (ishah) of your lord into your bosom, and I gave to you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that were too little, I would add to you the like of these and the like of these.
9Why have you despised the word of YHWH, to do the evil in my eyes? Uriah the Hittite you struck with the sword, and his wife (ishah) you took to yourself for a wife (ishah), and him you slew with the sword of the sons of Ammon.
10And now, the sword shall not turn aside from your house forever, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife (ishah) of Uriah the Hittite to be a wife (ishah) to you.'
11Thus says YHWH: 'Behold, I am raising up against you evil out of your own house; and I will take your wives (ishah) before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives (ishah) in the sight of this sun.
12For you did it in secret, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.'"
13And David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against YHWH." And Nathan said to David, "YHWH also has put away your sin; you shall not die.
14Nevertheless, because you have utterly scorned the enemies of YHWH by this thing, the son also that is born to you shall surely die."
15And Nathan went to his house. And YHWH struck the child that Uriah's wife (ishah) bore to David, and it became very ill.
16And David sought God for the boy; and David fasted a fast, and went in and spent the night, and lay on the ground.
17And the elders of his house arose over him, to raise him up from the ground; but he would not, and did not eat bread with them.
18And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died; and the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, "Behold, while the child was alive (chai), we spoke to him, and he did not listen to our voice; and how shall we say to him, 'The child is dead'? Then he may do harm."
19And David saw that his servants were whispering, and David understood that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" And they said, "He is dead."
20And David arose from the ground, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his garments; and he came into the house of YHWH, and bowed himself down; then he came to his own house, and asked, and they set bread before him, and he ate.
21And his servants said to him, "What is this thing that you have done? For the sake of the child, while alive (chai), you fasted and wept; but when the child died, you rose and ate bread."
22And he said, "While the child was still alive (chai), I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who knows? YHWH may be gracious to me, and the child may live (chai).'
23But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I am going to him, but he will not return to me."
24And David comforted Bathsheba his wife (ishah), and went in to her, and lay with her; and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And YHWH loved him,
25and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name Jedidiah, for the sake of YHWH.
26And Joab fought against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, and captured the royal city.
27And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, "I have fought against Rabbah; I have also captured the city of waters.
28And now, gather the rest of the people, and encamp against the city, and capture it; lest I capture the city, and my name be called over it."
29And David gathered all the people, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and captured it.
30And he took the crown of their king from upon his head — and its weight was a talent of gold, with precious stone — and it was set upon David's head. And he brought out the spoil of the city, very much.
31And the people who were in it he brought out, and put them under the saw, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick-kiln; and thus he did to all the cities of the sons of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
