And YHWH spoke to Moses: "Go, go up from here, you and the people whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying: To your seed I will give it—
and I will send before you an angel; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite—
to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, for you are a stiff-necked people, lest I consume you in the way."
And the people heard this evil word, and they mourned; and no man (ish) put on him his ornaments.
And YHWH said to Moses: "Say to the sons of Israel: You are a stiff-necked people; one moment I might go up in your midst and consume you; and now, take down your ornaments from upon you, that I may know what I shall do to you."
And the sons of Israel stripped off their ornaments from Mount Horeb onward.
And Moses would take the tent (ohel) and pitch it for himself outside the camp, far off from the camp; and he called it the tent (ohel) of appointed time (moed). And it came to pass that everyone who sought YHWH would go out to the tent (ohel) of appointed time (moed), which was outside the camp.
And it came to pass, when Moses went out to the tent (ohel), that all the people rose up, and stood, each man (ish) at the door of his tent (ohel), and looked after Moses ad(עד) he had gone into the tent (ohel).
And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tent (ohel), that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tent (ohel), and he spoke with Moses.
And all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the door of the tent (ohel), and all the people rose up and bowed down, each man (ish) at the door of his tent (ohel).
And YHWH spoke to Moses face to face, as a man (ish) speaks to his companion. And he would return to the camp; but his minister Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from within the tent (ohel).
And Moses said to YHWH: "See, you say to me: Bring up this people; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said: I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my eyes.
And now, if please I have found favor in your eyes, make known to me please your ways, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your eyes; and consider that this nation is your people."
And he said: "My face shall go, and I will give you rest."
And he said to him: "If your face does not go, do not bring us up from here.
And in what shall it be known then that I have found favor in your eyes, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinguished, I and your people, from all the people who are upon the face of the ground (adamah)?"
And YHWH said to Moses: "Also this thing which you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my eyes, and I know you by name."
And he said: "Show me, I pray, your glory."
And he said: "I will make all my goodness pass before your face, and I will proclaim the name of YHWH before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy."
And he said: "You are not able to see my face, for man (adam) shall not see me and live."
And YHWH said: "Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand upon the rock.
And it shall come to pass, when my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my palm ad(עד) I have passed by.
And I will remove my palm, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen."
