Ezra 10

Yeshua Literal Version (YLV)

And while Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and falling down before the house of God, there gathered to him out of Israel a very great assembly—men (ish) and women (ishah) and children; for the people wept a great weeping.

And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra, "We have been faithless against our God and have caused foreign women (ishah) of the peoples of the land to dwell [with us]; yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this.

And now let us cut a covenant (berit) with our God to bring out all the wives (ishah) and those born of them, by the counsel of my Lord (Adonai) and of those who tremble at the commandment (mitzvah) of our God; and let it be done according to the Torah.

Arise, for the matter is upon you, and we are with you; be strong and do it."

And Ezra arose and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear to do according to this word; and they swore.

And Ezra rose from before the house of God and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and he went there, [and] he ate no bread and drank no water, for he was mourning because of the faithlessness of the exile.

And they caused a voice to pass through Judah and Jerusalem to all the sons of the exile, to gather to Jerusalem;

and everyone who would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his property would be devoted to destruction, and he himself separated from the assembly of the exile.

And all the men (ish) of Judah and Benjamin gathered to Jerusalem within three days—it was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month—and all the people sat in the open square of the house of God, trembling because of the matter and because of the rains.

And Ezra the priest arose and said to them, "You have been faithless and have caused foreign women (ishah) to dwell, to add to the guilt of Israel.

And now give confession to YHWH, the God of your fathers, and do His pleasure; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign women (ishah)."

And all the assembly answered and said with a great voice, "So—according to your word it is upon us to do.

But the people are many, and it is the season of rains, and there is no strength to stand outside; and the work is not for one day nor for two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.

Let now our princes stand for all the assembly, and all who in our cities have caused foreign women (ishah) to dwell, let them come at appointed times, and with them the elders of each city and its judges, until the burning anger of our God be turned from us regarding this matter."

Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah stood against this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.

And the sons of the exile did so. And Ezra the priest [and] men (ish), heads of the fathers, by their fathers' house, and all of them by names, were set apart; and they sat on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

And they finished with all the men (ish) who had caused foreign women (ishah) to dwell, by the first day of the first month.

And there were found among the sons of the priests who had caused foreign women (ishah) to dwell: of the sons of Yeshua the son of Jozadak and his brothers—Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

And they gave their hand to bring out their wives (ishah); and being guilty, [they offered] a ram of the flock for their guilt.
