And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and bore Cain, and said: "I have gotten a man (ish), YHWH."
And she continued to bear his brother, Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a worker (avad) of the ground (adamah).
And it came to pass at the end of days, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground (adamah) an offering to YHWH.
And Abel, he also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And YHWH looked with favor to Abel and to his offering,
but to Cain and to his offering he did not look. And it burned to Cain greatly, and his face fell.
And YHWH said to Cain, "Why has it burned to you, and why has your face fallen?
Is it not, if you do well, a lifting up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and to you is its desire, but you shall rule over it."
And Cain said to Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
And YHWH said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" And he said, "I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?"
And he said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground (adamah).
And now cursed are you from the ground (adamah), which has opened its mouth to take your brother's blood from your hand.
When you work (avad) the ground (adamah), it shall not continue to give its strength to you; a wanderer and a fugitive you shall be in the earth."
And Cain said to YHWH, "My iniquity is too great to bear.
Behold, you have driven me this day from upon the face of the ground (adamah), and from your face I shall be hidden; and I shall be a wanderer and a fugitive in the earth, and it shall come to pass that anyone finding me will kill me."
And YHWH said to him, "Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken sevenfold." And YHWH set a sign (ot) for Cain, lest anyone finding him should strike him.
And Cain went out from the presence of YHWH, and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain knew his woman (ishah), and she conceived and bore Enoch; and he was building a city, and he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.
And to Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methushael; and Methushael begot Lamech.
And Lamech took for himself two women (ishah); the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the second, Zillah.
And Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those dwelling in tents and with livestock.
And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe.
And Zillah, she also bore Tubal-cain, a hammerer of every cutting tool of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
And Lamech said to his women (ishah), "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; women (ishah) of Lamech, give ear to my speech; for I have slain a man (ish) for my wound, and a young man for my bruise.
For sevenfold Cain shall be avenged, but Lamech seventy and seven."
And Adam knew his woman (ishah) again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth: "For God has appointed for me another seed instead of Abel, because Cain killed him."
And to Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then it was begun to call upon the name of YHWH.
