1Woe, Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! Add year to year; let the feasts (chag) come round.
2And I will distress Ariel, and there shall be mourning and moaning; and she shall be to me like an Ariel.
3And I will encamp against you all around, and I will lay siege against you with a mound, and I will raise against you siege works.
4And you shall be brought low, you shall speak from the earth, and from the dust (aphar) your speech shall be bowed down; and your voice shall be like a ghost from the earth, and from the dust (aphar) your speech shall whisper.
5And the multitude of your strangers shall be like fine dust, and the multitude of the ruthless ones like passing chaff; and it shall be in an instant, suddenly.
6From YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) you shall be visited, with thunder and with earthquake and a great noise, whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.
7And it shall be like a dream, a vision of the night, the multitude of all the nations who war against Ariel, even all who war against her and her stronghold, and those who distress her.
8And it shall be as when the hungry man dreams, and behold, he eats, but he awakes, and his soul (nephesh) is empty; or as when the thirsty man dreams, and behold, he drinks, but he awakes, and behold, he is faint, and his soul (nephesh) is longing; so shall be the multitude of all the nations who war against Mount Zion.
9Linger and be amazed; blind yourselves and be blind; they are drunk, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.
10For YHWH has poured out over you a spirit (ruach) of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes; the prophets, and your heads, the seers, he has covered.
11And the vision of all this has become for you like the words of a sealed book, which they give to one who knows a book, saying, "Read this, please," and he says, "I cannot, for it is sealed";
12and the book is given to one who does not know a book, saying, "Read this, please," and he says, "I do not know a book."
13And my Lord (Adonai) said: Because this people draws near with its mouth, and with its lips they honor me, but its heart it has put far from me, and their fear of me has become a commandment (mitzvah) of men (ish), learned by rote,
14therefore, behold, I will again do wonderfully with this people, wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of its wise men shall perish, and the understanding of its prudent men shall be hidden.
15Woe to those who go deep to hide counsel from YHWH, and their deeds are in the dark, and they say, "Who sees us? And who knows us?"
16O your perversity! Shall the potter be reckoned as the clay, that the thing made should say of him who made it, "He did not make me," and the thing formed say of him who formed it, "He has no understanding"?
17Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall turn into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be reckoned as a forest?
18And in that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of gloom and out of darkness the eyes of the blind shall see.
19And the humble shall add joy in YHWH, and the needy of man (adam) shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20For the ruthless one has ceased, and the scorner is finished, and all who watch for iniquity are cut off,
21those who make a man (adam) an offender by a word, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and turn aside the righteous with emptiness.
22Therefore thus says YHWH to the house of Jacob, who redeemed Abraham: Not now shall Jacob be ashamed, and not now shall his face grow pale.
23For when he sees his children, the work of my hands, in his midst, they shall sanctify my name, and they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall stand in awe of the God of Israel.
24And those who err in spirit (ruach) shall know understanding, and those who murmur shall learn instruction.
