1Let me sing now for my beloved a song of my love concerning his vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard on a fruitful horn of a hill;
2And he dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vine, and built a tower in its midst, and also hewed out a winepress in it; and he waited for it to produce grapes, but it produced wild grapes.
3And now, O inhabitant of Jerusalem and man (ish) of Judah, judge, I pray, between Me and My vineyard.
4What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I waited for it to produce grapes, did it produce wild grapes?
5And now let Me make known to you what I am about to do to My vineyard: removing its hedge, and it shall be for consuming; breaking down its wall, and it shall be for trampling;
6And I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned nor hoed, and briers and thorns shall come up; and upon the clouds I will command (tzivvah) that they rain no rain upon it.
7For the vineyard of YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) is the house of Israel, and the man (ish) of Judah the plant of His delight; and He waited for judgment (mishpat), but behold bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold a cry.
8Woe to those who join house to house, who bring field near to field, until there is no room, and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land!
9In my ears YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) has sworn: Surely many houses shall become a desolation, great and good ones, with no inhabitant.
10For ten yoke of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of a homer shall yield an ephah.
11Woe to those who rise early in the morning to pursue strong drink, who tarry late in the twilight till wine inflames them!
12And the harp and the lyre, the timbrel and the flute, and wine are in their feasts; but the work of YHWH they do not regard, and the deed of His hands they have not seen.
13Therefore My people have gone into exile for lack of knowledge; and their honored men are famished, and their multitude is parched with thirst.
14Therefore Sheol has enlarged its soul (nephesh), and opened its mouth without statute (choq); and her splendor and her multitude and her tumult shall go down, and he who exults in her.
15And man (adam) is bowed down, and man (ish) is brought low, and the eyes of the lofty are humbled;
16And YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) is exalted in judgment (mishpat), and the holy God is sanctified in righteousness.
17And the lambs shall graze as in their pasture, and the waste places of the fat ones sojourners shall eat.
18Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood, and sin as with cart ropes;
19who say: "Let Him hasten, let Him speed His work, that we may see it; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel (qedosh yisrael) draw near and come, that we may know it!"
20Woe to those who say of evil good, and of good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
21Woe to those wise in their own eyes, and prudent before their own faces!
22Woe to those mighty to drink wine, and men (ish) of strength to mix strong drink;
23who justify the wicked for a bribe, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
24Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours stubble, and as dry grass sinks down in the flame, their root shall be like rottenness, and their blossom shall go up like dust; because they have rejected the Torah of YHWH of hosts (tzevaot), and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel (qedosh yisrael).
25Therefore the anger of YHWH burned against His people, and He stretched out His hand against them and struck them; and the mountains trembled, and their carcasses were like refuse in the midst of the streets. For all this His anger has not turned away, and His hand is still stretched out.
26And He will lift up a banner for the nations from afar, and will whistle for it from the end of the earth; and behold, it shall come swiftly, speedily.
27None is weary and none stumbles among them; none slumbers and none sleeps; the belt of their loins is not loosened, and the thong of their sandals is not broken;
28whose arrows are sharpened, and all their bows bent; the hooves of their horses are reckoned like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind.
29It has a roaring like the lioness; it roars like the young lions, and growls, and seizes the prey, and carries it off safely, and there is none delivering.
30And it shall growl over it in that day like the growling of the sea; and one looks to the land, and behold darkness and distress, and the light is darkened in its clouds.
