And Jerubbaal, he is Gideon, rose early, and all the people who were with him, and they encamped beside En-harod; and the camp of Midian was to him on the north, from the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
And YHWH said to Gideon, "The people who are with you are too many for me to give Midian into their hand, lest Israel boast against me, saying, My own hand has saved (yasha) me.
And now, call, I pray, in the ears of the people, saying, Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart early from Mount Gilead." And there returned from the people twenty-two thousand, and ten thousand remained.
And YHWH said to Gideon, "The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will refine them for you there; and it shall be, of whom I say to you, This one shall go with you, he shall go with you; and everyone of whom I say to you, This one shall not go with you, he shall not go."
And he brought down the people to the water; and YHWH said to Gideon, "Everyone who laps with his tongue from the water, as the dog laps, you shall set him apart; and everyone who bows down upon his knees to drink."
And the number of those who lapped with their hand to their mouth was three hundred men (ish); but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
And YHWH said to Gideon, "By the three hundred men (ish) who lapped I will save (yasha) you, and I will give Midian into your hand; and let all the people go, each man (ish) to his place."
And they took the provisions of the people in their hand, and their horns; and all the men (ish) of Israel he sent away, each man (ish) to his tents, but the three hundred men (ish) he held fast; and the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
And it came to pass in that night, that YHWH said to him, "Arise, go down against the camp; for I have given it into your hand.
And if you are afraid to go down, go down, you and Purah your young man, to the camp;
and you shall hear what they speak; and afterward your hands shall be strengthened, and you shall go down against the camp." Then he went down, he and Purah his young man, to the edge of the armed ranks that were in the camp.
And Midian and Amalek and all the sons of the east were lying in the valley, like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, like the sand which is upon the lip of the sea for multitude.
And Gideon came, and behold, a man (ish) was recounting a dream to his neighbor; and he said, "Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a round loaf of barley bread was tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came as far as the tent, and struck it, and it fell; and it turned it upside down, and the tent fell."
And his neighbor answered and said, "This is nothing but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man (ish) of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp."
And it came to pass, when Gideon heard the recounting of the dream, and its breaking, that he bowed down; and he returned to the camp of Israel, and said, "Arise, for YHWH has given into your hand the camp of Midian."
And he divided the three hundred men (ish) into three heads; and he put horns into the hand of all of them, and empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers.
And he said to them, "From me you shall see, and so you shall do; and behold, when I come to the edge of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do.
And I will blow on the horn, I and all who are with me; then you shall blow on the horns, you also, all around the whole camp, and you shall say, For YHWH and for Gideon!"
And Gideon came, and the hundred men (ish) who were with him, to the edge of the camp at the head of the middle watch; they had only just set up the watchmen; and they blew on the horns, and shattered the pitchers that were in their hand.
And the three heads blew on the horns, and broke the pitchers; and they held fast with their left hand the torches, and with their right hand the horns to blow; and they cried out, "A sword for YHWH and for Gideon!"
And they stood, each man (ish) in his place, around the camp; and all the camp ran, and they shouted, and fled.
And they blew the three hundred horns, and YHWH set the sword of each man (ish) against his neighbor, even throughout all the camp; and the camp fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the lip of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.
And the men (ish) of Israel were called together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh; and they pursued after Midian.
And Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, "Come down to meet Midian, and capture before them the waters as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan." And every man (ish) of Ephraim was called together, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan.
And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they killed Oreb at the Rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the Winepress of Zeeb; and they pursued Midian; and the head of Oreb and Zeeb they brought to Gideon beyond the Jordan.
