The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah — that was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon —
which Jeremiah the prophet spoke concerning all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying,
From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, these twenty-three years, the word of YHWH has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you have not heard.
And YHWH has sent to you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending, but you have not heard, nor inclined your ear to hear,
saying, Return now, every man (ish), from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell on the ground (adamah) which YHWH has given to you and to your fathers, from everlasting and to everlasting;
and do not go after other gods to serve (avad) them, and to bow down to them, and do not provoke me with the work of your hands, and I will do you no harm.
But you have not heard me, declares YHWH, that you might provoke me with the work of your hands, to your own harm.
Therefore thus says YHWH of hosts (tzevaot): Because you have not heard my words,
behold, I am sending and taking all the families of the north, declares YHWH, and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land, and against its inhabitants, and against all these nations round about; and I will utterly destroy them, and make them a horror, and a hissing, and everlasting desolations.
And I will destroy from among them the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp.
And this whole land shall become a desolation, a waste; and these nations shall serve (avad) the king of Babylon seventy years.
And it shall be, when seventy years are fulfilled, that I will visit upon the king of Babylon, and upon that nation, declares YHWH, their iniquity, and upon the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it everlasting desolations.
And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have spoken against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations.
For many nations and great kings shall make them serve (avad) also; and I will repay them according to their deeds, and according to the work of their hands.
For thus says YHWH, the God of Israel, to me: Take this cup of the wine of fury from my hand, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.
And they shall drink, and stagger, and act like madmen, because of the sword that I am sending among them.
And I took the cup from the hand of YHWH, and made all the nations drink, to whom YHWH had sent me:
Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and her kings, her princes, to make them a waste, a horror, a hissing, and a curse, as it is this day;
Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people;
and all the mixed multitude, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Gaza, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;
Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon;
and all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastland which is beyond the sea;
Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all who cut the corners of their hair;
and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed multitude who dwell in the wilderness;
and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media;
and all the kings of the north, near and far, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the earth which are on the face of the ground (adamah); and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.
And you shall say to them, Thus says YHWH of hosts (tzevaot), the God of Israel: Drink, and be drunk, and vomit, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword that I am sending among you.
And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, Thus says YHWH of hosts (tzevaot): You shall surely drink.
For behold, in the city which is called by my name I am beginning to bring evil, and shall you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished; for I am calling a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares YHWH of hosts (tzevaot).
And you shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them, YHWH roars from on high, and from his holy habitation he utters his voice; he mightily roars over his fold; a shout like those who tread grapes he gives, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
A noise has come to the end of the earth; for YHWH has a controversy with the nations, he enters into judgment with all flesh (basar); the wicked he has given to the sword, declares YHWH.
Thus says YHWH of hosts (tzevaot): Behold, evil is going forth from nation to nation, and a great storm shall be raised up from the uttermost parts of the earth.
And the slain of YHWH shall be in that day from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth; they shall not be lamented, nor gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung on the face of the ground (adamah).
Wail, you shepherds, and cry out; and roll yourselves, you leaders of the flock; for the days of your slaughter are fulfilled, and your dispersions, and you shall fall like a precious vessel.
And flight shall perish from the shepherds, and escape from the leaders of the flock.
The sound of the cry of the shepherds, and the wailing of the leaders of the flock! For YHWH is despoiling their pasture.
And the peaceable pastures are silenced because of the fierce anger of YHWH.
He has forsaken his lair like a young lion; for their land has become a horror because of the fierceness of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.
