1And it came to pass in that year, in beginning (bereshit) of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah son of Azzur the prophet, who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of YHWH, before the eyes of the priests and all the people, saying,
2Thus said YHWH of hosts (tzevaot), the God of Israel, saying, I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
3In yet two years of days I am bringing back to this place all the vessels of the house of YHWH that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and brought them to Babylon.
4And Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who went to Babylon, I am bringing back to this place, declares YHWH; for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.
5And Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet before the eyes of the priests and before the eyes of all the people who were standing in the house of YHWH;
6and Jeremiah the prophet said, Amen! So may YHWH do! May YHWH establish your words that you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the house of YHWH and all the exile from Babylon to this place.
7Only hear now this word that I am speaking in your ears and in the ears of all the people:
8The prophets who were before me and before you from of old—they prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms, of war and of evil and of pestilence.
9The prophet who prophesies of peace—when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet shall be known, whom YHWH has truly sent.
10And Hananiah the prophet took the bar from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, and he broke it.
11And Hananiah spoke before the eyes of all the people, saying, Thus said YHWH: So I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon within yet two years of days from off the neck of all the nations. And Jeremiah the prophet went his way.
12And the word of YHWH came to Jeremiah, after Hananiah the prophet broke the bar from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
13Go, and you shall say to Hananiah, saying, Thus said YHWH: Bars of wood you have broken, but you shall make in their place bars of iron.
14For thus said YHWH of hosts (tzevaot), the God of Israel: A yoke of iron I have put on the neck of all these nations, to serve (avad) Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him (avad); and also the beast of the field I have given to him.
15And Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah: YHWH has not sent you, and you have made this people trust upon falsehood.
16Therefore thus said YHWH: Behold, I am sending you away from off the face of the ground (adamah); this year you are dying, for you have spoken perversion against YHWH.
17And Hananiah the prophet died in that year, in the seventh month.
