1And behold, a man (ish) of God came from Judah by the word of YHWH to Bethel, and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.
2And he cried against the altar by the word of YHWH and said, "Altar, altar, thus says YHWH: Behold, a son is born to the house of David, Josiah his name, and he will sacrifice upon you the priests of the high places who burn incense upon you, and bones of man (adam) they will burn upon you."
3And he gave on that day a wonder (mofet), saying, "This is the wonder (mofet) which YHWH has spoken: Behold, the altar shall be torn apart, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out."
4And it came to pass, when the king heard the word of the man (ish) of God which he cried against the altar in Bethel, that Jeroboam stretched out his hand from upon the altar, saying, "Seize him." And his hand, which he stretched out against him, dried up, and he could not draw it back to himself.
5And the altar was torn apart, and the ashes were poured out from the altar, according to the wonder (mofet) which the man (ish) of God had given by the word of YHWH.
6And the king answered and said to the man (ish) of God, "Entreat now the face of YHWH your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me." And the man (ish) of God entreated the face of YHWH, and the king's hand was restored to him and became as at the first.
7And the king spoke to the man (ish) of God, "Come with me to the house and refresh yourself, and I will give you a gift."
8And the man (ish) of God said to the king, "If you give me half your house, I will not go in with you, nor will I eat bread nor drink water in this place.
9For so he commanded me (tzivvah) by the word of YHWH, saying, You shall not eat bread nor drink water, nor return by the way that you went."
10And he went by another way, and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel.
11Now a certain old prophet was dwelling in Bethel, and his son came and recounted to him all the deeds that the man (ish) of God had done that day in Bethel; the words that he had spoken to the king, they recounted them to their father.
12And their father spoke to them, "Which way did he go?" And his sons had seen the way that the man (ish) of God who came from Judah went.
13And he said to his sons, "Saddle for me the donkey." And they saddled for him the donkey, and he rode upon it.
14And he went after the man (ish) of God and found him sitting under the terebinth, and he said to him, "Are you the man (ish) of God who came from Judah?" And he said, "I am."
15And he said to him, "Come with me to the house and eat bread."
16And he said, "I am not able to return with you nor to go in with you, nor will I eat bread nor will I drink water with you in this place.
17For a word came to me by the word of YHWH: You shall not eat bread nor drink water there, nor return to go by the way that you went on it."
18And he said to him, "I also am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of YHWH, saying, Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water." He lied to him.
19And he returned with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.
20And it came to pass, as they were sitting at the table, that the word of YHWH came to the prophet who had brought him back.
21And he cried to the man (ish) of God who came from Judah, saying, "Thus says YHWH: Because you have rebelled against the mouth of YHWH, and have not kept the commandment (mitzvah) which YHWH your God commanded you (tzivvah),
22and you returned and ate bread and drank water in the place of which he said to you, Do not eat bread and do not drink water—your carcass shall not come to the grave of your fathers."
23And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the donkey, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
24And he went, and a lion found him on the way and killed him, and his carcass was cast on the way, and the donkey was standing beside it, and the lion was standing beside the carcass.
25And behold, men (ish) were passing by, and they saw the carcass cast on the way, and the lion standing beside the carcass; and they came and spoke of it in the city where the old prophet was dwelling.
26And the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard it, and he said, "It is the man (ish) of God who rebelled against the mouth of YHWH; and YHWH has given him to the lion, and it has torn him and killed him, according to the word of YHWH which he spoke to him."
27And he spoke to his sons, saying, "Saddle for me the donkey." And they saddled it.
28And he went and found his carcass cast on the way, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the carcass; the lion had not eaten the carcass nor torn the donkey.
29And the prophet lifted up the carcass of the man (ish) of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back; and he came to the city of the old prophet, to lament and to bury him.
30And he laid his carcass in his own grave, and they lamented over him, "Alas, my brother!"
31And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he said to his sons, saying, "When I die, then bury me in the grave in which the man (ish) of God is buried; beside his bones lay my bones.
32For the word that he cried by the word of YHWH against the altar that is in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass."
33After this thing Jeroboam did not return from his evil way, but again made from the ends of the people priests of high places; whoever desired, he filled his hand, and he became one of the priests of high places.
34And by this thing there was sin to the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off and to destroy it from upon the face of the ground (adamah).
