1At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick.
2And Jeroboam said to his wife (ishah), "Arise now and disguise yourself, that they may not know that you are the wife (ishah) of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh; behold, there is Ahijah the prophet; he spoke concerning me that I would be king over this people.
3And take in your hand ten loaves, and cakes, and a flask of honey, and go to him; he will tell you what shall become of the boy."
4And the wife (ishah) of Jeroboam did so, and arose and went to Shiloh and came to the house of Ahijah. And Ahijah could not see, for his eyes were set because of his old age.
5And YHWH said to Ahijah, "Behold, the wife (ishah) of Jeroboam is coming to inquire a thing from you concerning her son, for he is sick; thus and thus you shall speak to her. And it will be, when she comes in, that she will disguise herself."
6And it came to pass, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet coming in at the door, that he said, "Come in, wife (ishah) of Jeroboam; why is this that you disguise yourself? For I am sent to you with hard tidings.
7Go, say to Jeroboam, Thus says YHWH, the God of Israel: Because I raised you up from the midst of the people and made you ruler over my people Israel,
8and tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you—and yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments (mitzvot) and who walked after me with all his heart, to do only what was right in my eyes—
9but you did evil above all who were before you, and you went and made for yourself other gods and molten images, to provoke me, and you cast me behind your back—
10therefore, behold, I am bringing evil to the house of Jeroboam, and I will cut off from Jeroboam every one who urinates against a wall, the shut up and the forsaken in Israel, and I will sweep away after the house of Jeroboam, as one sweeps away the dung until it is gone.
11Him who dies of Jeroboam in the city the dogs will eat, and him who dies in the field the birds of the heavens will eat; for YHWH has spoken.
12And you, arise, go to your house; when your feet enter the city, the child will die.
13And all Israel will lament for him and bury him, for this one alone of Jeroboam will come to a grave, because in him there was found something good toward YHWH, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.
14And YHWH will raise up for himself a king over Israel who will cut off the house of Jeroboam that day—and what? even now!
15And YHWH will smite Israel as the reed is shaken in the water, and he will uproot Israel from upon this good ground (adamah) which he gave to their fathers, and he will scatter them beyond the River, because they made their Asherim, provoking YHWH.
16And he will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who sinned and who made Israel to sin.
17And the wife (ishah) of Jeroboam arose and went and came to Tirzah; as she came to the threshold of the house, the boy died.
18And all Israel buried him and lamented for him, according to the word of YHWH which he spoke by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet.
19And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he warred and how he reigned, behold, they are written on the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel.
20And the days that Jeroboam reigned were twenty-two years, and he lay down with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his place.
21And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was a son of forty-one years when he reigned, and seventeen years he reigned in Jerusalem, the city that YHWH chose to put his name there out of all the tribes of Israel; and his mother's name was Naamah the Ammonitess.
22And Judah did the evil in the eyes of YHWH, and they provoked him to jealousy more than all that their fathers had done by their sins which they sinned.
23And they also built for themselves high places, and pillars, and Asherim, on every high hill and under every leafy tree.
24And there was also a male shrine-prostitute in the land; they did according to all the abominations of the nations whom YHWH dispossessed from before the children of Israel.
25And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem.
26And he took the treasures of the house of YHWH and the treasures of the king's house, and he took everything; and he took all the shields of gold that Solomon had made.
27And king Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze, and committed them to the hand of the captains of the runners who kept the door of the king's house.
28And it came to pass, as often as the king went into the house of YHWH, the runners would bear them and bring them back to the chamber of the runners.
29And the rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did, are they not written on the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?
30And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days.
31And Rehoboam lay down with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and his mother's name was Naamah the Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his place.
