And it came to pass after many days, that the word of YHWH came to Elijah in the third year, saying: "Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will give rain upon the face of the ground (adamah)."
And Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. And the famine was severe in Samaria.
And Ahab called Obadiah who was over the house. Now Obadiah feared YHWH greatly.
And it came to pass, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of YHWH, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them, fifty men (ish) in a cave, and sustained them with bread and water.
And Ahab said to Obadiah: "Go through the land, to all the springs of water and to all the brooks; perhaps we may find grass and keep alive horse and mule, and not cut off any of the beasts."
And they divided the land between them to pass through it; Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him; and he recognized him, and fell on his face, and said: "Is it you, my lord Elijah?"
And he said to him: "It is I; go, say to your lord: Behold, Elijah."
And he said: "What have I sinned, that you are giving your servant into the hand of Ahab, to put me to death?
As YHWH your God lives (chai), there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you; and when they said, He is not here, he made the kingdom and the nation swear that they did not find you.
And now you say: Go, say to your lord: Behold, Elijah.
And it shall be, when I go from you, that the spirit (ruach) of YHWH will carry you to where I do not know; and I will come to tell Ahab, and he will not find you, and he will kill me; but your servant has feared YHWH from my youth.
Has it not been told to my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of YHWH, how I hid of the prophets of YHWH a hundred men (ish), fifty, fifty men (ish) in a cave, and sustained them with bread and water?
And now you say: Go, say to your lord: Behold, Elijah; and he will kill me."
And Elijah said: "As YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) lives (chai), before whom I stand, surely today I will show myself to him."
And Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him: "Is it you, troubler of Israel?"
And he said: "I have not troubled Israel, but you and the house of your father, in that you have forsaken the commandments (mitzvot) of YHWH, and you have gone after the Baals.
And now send, gather to me all Israel to mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, who eat at the table of Jezebel."
And Ahab sent among all the sons of Israel, and gathered the prophets to mount Carmel.
And Elijah came near to all the people and said: "How long will you go limping upon two opinions? If YHWH is God, go after Him; but if Baal, go after him." And the people did not answer him a word.
And Elijah said to the people: "I, I alone, am left a prophet of YHWH; but the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men (ish).
And let them give to us two bulls, and let them choose for themselves the one bull, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire; and I will prepare the one bull, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire.
And you shall call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of YHWH; and the God who answers by fire, He is God." And all the people answered and said: "The word is good."
And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: "Choose for yourselves the one bull, and prepare it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire."
And they took the bull which was given to them, and prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from the morning even until noon, saying: "O Baal, answer us." But there was no voice, and none answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made.
And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said: "Call with a great voice, for he is a god; for he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey; perhaps he is asleep and must awake."
And they called with a great voice, and cut themselves according to their custom (mishpat) with swords and with lances, until blood gushed out upon them.
And it came to pass, when noon passed, that they prophesied until the going up of the offering; but there was no voice, and none answered, and none gave heed.
And Elijah said to all the people: "Come near to me." And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of YHWH that was thrown down.
And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of YHWH had come, saying: "Israel shall be your name."
And he built the stones into an altar in the name of YHWH; and he made a trench, as great as a house of two seahs of seed, around the altar.
And he arranged the wood, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood.
And he said: "Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood." And he said: "Do it a second time"; and they did it a second time. And he said: "Do it a third time"; and they did it a third time.
And the water went around the altar; and also the trench he filled with water.
And it came to pass at the going up of the offering, that Elijah the prophet came near and said: "YHWH, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today let it be known that You are God in Israel, and I am Your servant, and at Your word I have done all these things.
Answer me, YHWH, answer me, that this people may know that You, YHWH, are God, and that You have turned their heart backward."
Then the fire of YHWH fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust (aphar), and the water that was in the trench it licked up.
And all the people saw, and fell on their faces; and they said: "YHWH, He is God; YHWH, He is God."
And Elijah said to them: "Seize the prophets of Baal; let not a man (ish) of them escape." And they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slaughtered them there.
And Elijah said to Ahab: "Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of the roar of rain."
And Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel, and he bowed down to the earth, and put his face between his knees.
And he said to his servant: "Go up now, look toward the way of the sea." And he went up and looked, and said: "There is nothing." And he said: "Go again seven times."
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said: "Behold, a small cloud like a man's (ish) palm rising from the sea." And he said: "Go up, say to Ahab: Bind the chariot and go down, that the rain not stop you."
And it came to pass, in the meanwhile, that the heavens grew black with clouds and spirit (ruach), and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.
And the hand of YHWH was upon Elijah, and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
