1And Elijah the Tishbite, of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab: "As YHWH the God of Israel lives (chai), before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except according to my word."
2And the word of YHWH came to him, saying:
3"Go from here, and turn for yourself eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith that is on the face of the Jordan.
4And it shall be, from the brook you shall drink, and the ravens I have commanded (tzivvah) to sustain you there."
5And he went and did according to the word of YHWH; and he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith that is on the face of the Jordan.
6And the ravens brought him bread and meat (basar) in the morning, and bread and meat (basar) in the evening; and from the brook he drank.
7And it came to pass at the end of days, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
8And the word of YHWH came to him, saying:
9"Arise, go to Zarephath which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there; behold, I have commanded (tzivvah) there a woman (ishah), a widow, to sustain you."
10And he arose and went to Zarephath, and came to the entrance of the city, and behold, there a woman (ishah), a widow, gathering wood; and he called to her and said: "Take for me, please, a little water in the vessel, that I may drink."
11And she went to take it, and he called to her and said: "Take for me, please, a morsel of bread in your hand."
12And she said: "As YHWH your God lives (chai), I have no cake, but only a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the cruse; and behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and prepare it for me and for my son, and we shall eat it, and die."
13And Elijah said to her: "Do not fear; go, do as you have said; only make me from there a little cake first, and bring it out to me, and for you and for your son make afterward.
14For thus says YHWH the God of Israel: The jar of meal shall not be spent, and the cruse of oil shall not fail, until the day YHWH gives rain upon the face of the ground (adamah)."
15And she went and did according to the word of Elijah; and she ate, she and he and her household, days.
16The jar of meal was not spent, and the cruse of oil did not fail, according to the word of YHWH which He spoke by the hand of Elijah.
17And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman (ishah), the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was very severe, until there was no breath (neshamah) left in him.
18And she said to Elijah: "What have I to do with you, O man (ish) of God? Have you come to me to bring my iniquity to remembrance, and to put my son to death?"
19And he said to her: "Give me your son." And he took him from her bosom, and brought him up to the upper chamber where he was dwelling, and laid him upon his bed.
20And he cried to YHWH and said: "YHWH my God, have You also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by putting her son to death?"
21And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to YHWH and said: "YHWH my God, let the soul (nephesh) of this child please return into him."
22And YHWH heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul (nephesh) of the child returned into him, and he revived.
23And Elijah took the child, and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house, and gave him to his mother; and Elijah said: "See, your son lives (chai)."
24And the woman (ishah) said to Elijah: "Now this I know, that you are a man (ish) of God, and that the word of YHWH in your mouth is truth."
