And the Philistines gathered all their camps to Aphek; and Israel was encamping by the spring which is in Jezreel.
And the lords of the Philistines were passing on by hundreds and by thousands; and David and his men (ish) were passing on in the rear with Achish.
And the princes of the Philistines said, "What are these Hebrews?" And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, "Is not this David, the servant of Saul king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or these years, and I have not found in him anything from the day of his deserting until this day?"
But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him, and the princes of the Philistines said to him, "Make the man (ish) return, that he may go back to his place where you have appointed him; and let him not go down with us into the battle, lest he become an adversary to us in the battle. And by what should this one reconcile himself to his lord? Is it not with the heads of these men (ish)?
Is not this David, of whom they sang to one another in the dances, saying, 'Saul has smitten his thousands, and David his ten thousands'?"
And Achish called David and said to him, "As YHWH lives (chai), you are upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the camp is good in my eyes; for I have not found evil in you from the day of your coming to me until this day; but in the eyes of the lords you are not good.
And now return and go in peace, that you do not do evil in the eyes of the lords of the Philistines."
And David said to Achish, "But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant from the day that I have been before you until this day, that I should not come and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?"
And Achish answered and said to David, "I know that you are good in my eyes, as an angel of God; nevertheless the princes of the Philistines have said, 'He shall not go up with us into the battle.'
And now rise early in the morning with the servants of your lord who came with you; and you shall rise early in the morning, and as soon as you have light, depart."
And David rose early, he and his men (ish), to go in the morning, to return to the land of the Philistines; and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
