1And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their camps for the host, to fight against Israel. And Achish said to David, "Knowing you shall know that with me you shall go out in the camp, you and your men (ish)."
2And David said to Achish, "Therefore you yourself shall know what your servant will do." And Achish said to David, "Therefore I will make you keeper of my head all the days."
3Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented for him and buried him in Ramah, even in his city. And Saul had removed the mediums and the necromancers out of the land.
4And the Philistines gathered themselves and came and encamped in Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israel, and they encamped in Gilboa.
5And Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, and he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly.
6And Saul inquired of YHWH, but YHWH did not answer him, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
7And Saul said to his servants, "Seek for me a woman (ishah), a mistress of a familiar spirit, that I may go to her and inquire of her." And his servants said to him, "Behold, there is a woman (ishah), a mistress of a familiar spirit, at En-dor."
8And Saul disguised himself and put on other garments, and he went, he and two men (ish) with him, and they came to the woman (ishah) by night. And he said, "Divine for me, please, by the familiar spirit, and bring up for me whomever I shall name to you."
9And the woman (ishah) said to him, "Behold, you yourself know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the necromancer out of the land; and why are you laying a snare for my soul (nephesh), to put me to death?"
10And Saul swore to her by YHWH, saying, "As YHWH lives (chai), no iniquity shall befall you in this thing."
11And the woman (ishah) said, "Whom shall I bring up for you?" And he said, "Bring up for me Samuel."
12And the woman (ishah) saw Samuel, and she cried out with a loud voice; and the woman (ishah) spoke to Saul, saying, "Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!"
13And the king said to her, "Do not fear; but what do you see?" And the woman (ishah) said to Saul, "I have seen gods coming up out of the earth."
14And he said to her, "What is his form?" And she said, "An old man (ish) is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe." And Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed his face to the ground and prostrated himself.
15And Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up?" And Saul said, "I am greatly distressed, for the Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me and answers me no more, neither by the hand of the prophets, nor by dreams; so I called you to make known to me what I shall do."
16And Samuel said, "And why do you ask me, seeing YHWH has turned away from you and become your adversary?
17And YHWH has done for himself as he spoke by my hand; and YHWH has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David.
18As you did not listen to the voice of YHWH, and did not carry out the heat of his anger upon Amalek, therefore YHWH has done this thing to you this day.
19And YHWH will also give Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me; YHWH will also give the camp of Israel into the hand of the Philistines."
20And Saul hastened and fell the fullness of his stature to the ground, and he was greatly afraid because of the words of Samuel; also there was no strength in him, for he had not eaten bread all the day and all the night.
21And the woman (ishah) came to Saul and saw that he was greatly terrified, and she said to him, "Behold, your maidservant has listened to your voice, and I have put my soul (nephesh) in my palm, and I have listened to your words which you spoke to me.
22And now, listen, please, also you, to the voice of your maidservant, and let me set before you a morsel of bread; and eat, that there may be strength in you when you go on the way."
23But he refused and said, "I will not eat." But his servants, and also the woman (ishah), pressed him, and he listened to their voice; and he arose from the ground and sat on the bed.
24And the woman (ishah) had a fatted calf in the house, and she hastened and slaughtered it; and she took flour and kneaded it and baked it into unleavened bread.
25And she brought it before Saul and before his servants, and they ate. And they arose and went away in that night.
