1And it came to pass after this, that the children of Moab and the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
2And they came and told Jehoshaphat, saying: "A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Aram; and behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar" — that is En-gedi.
3And Jehoshaphat feared, and set his face to seek YHWH, and proclaimed a fast over all Judah.
4And Judah gathered together to seek from YHWH; even from all the cities of Judah they came to seek YHWH.
5And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of YHWH, before the new court,
6and said: "YHWH, God of our fathers, are you not God in the heavens? And you rule over all the kingdoms of the nations; and in your hand is power and might, and none can stand against you.
7Are you not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and gave it to the seed of Abraham who loved you forever?
8And they dwelt in it, and built for you in it a sanctuary for your name, saying:
9'If evil comes upon us — sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine — we will stand before this house and before you, for your name is in this house, and we will cry to you out of our distress, and you will hear and save.'
10And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom you did not allow Israel to enter against when they came from the land of Egypt — but they turned aside from them and did not destroy them —
11and behold, they reward us, coming to drive us out of your possession which you have given us to inherit.
12Our God, will you not judge them? For there is no power in us before this great multitude that comes against us; and we do not know what we should do, but our eyes are upon you."
13And all Judah was standing before YHWH, with their little ones, their wives (ishah), and their children.
14And upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph — the spirit (ruach) of YHWH was upon him in the midst of the assembly;
15and he said: "Listen, all Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and king Jehoshaphat: Thus says YHWH to you: 'You, do not fear and do not be dismayed before this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's.
16Tomorrow go down against them; behold, they are coming up by the ascent of Ziz, and you shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
17It is not for you to fight in this; station yourselves, stand, and see the salvation (yeshuah) of YHWH with you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not fear and do not be dismayed; tomorrow go out before them, and YHWH is with you.'"
18And Jehoshaphat bowed his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before YHWH, to worship YHWH.
19And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, rose up to praise YHWH, the God of Israel, with an exceedingly loud voice.
20And they rose early in the morning, and went out to the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said: "Hear me, Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in YHWH your God, and you shall be established; believe in his prophets, and you shall prosper."
21And he took counsel with the people, and appointed singers to YHWH, and those praising in the splendor of holiness, as they went out before the armed men, and saying: "Give thanks to YHWH, for his lovingkindness is forever."
22And at the time they began with singing and praise, YHWH set ambushers against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, who came against Judah, and they were struck.
23And the children of Ammon and Moab stood against the inhabitants of mount Seir, to devote them to destruction and to destroy; and when they finished with the inhabitants of Seir, they helped, each man (ish) against his neighbor, to destroy.
24And Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, and they turned toward the multitude, and behold, they were corpses fallen to the ground, and there was none who escaped.
25And Jehoshaphat and his people came to plunder their spoil, and they found among them in abundance, both goods and corpses and precious vessels, and they stripped off for themselves until there was no carrying; and they were three days plundering the spoil, for it was much.
26And on the fourth day they assembled at the valley of Beracah, for there they blessed YHWH; therefore they called the name of that place the valley of Beracah, to this day.
27And every man (ish) of Judah and Jerusalem returned, and Jehoshaphat at their head, to return to Jerusalem with joy, for YHWH had made them rejoice over their enemies.
28And they came to Jerusalem with lyres and harps and trumpets, to the house of YHWH.
29And the dread of God was upon all the kingdoms of the lands, when they heard that YHWH had fought against the enemies of Israel.
30And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was quiet, and his God gave him rest round about.
31And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah; he was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.
32And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and did not turn aside from it, doing what was right in the eyes of YHWH.
33Only the high places were not removed; and still the people had not prepared their hearts for the God of their fathers.
34And the rest of the matters of Jehoshaphat, the first and the last, behold, they are written in the words of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is brought up into the book of the kings of Israel.
35And after this Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel; he did wickedly.
36And he joined him with himself to make ships to go to Tarshish; and they made ships in Ezion-geber.
37And Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying: "Because you have joined yourself with Ahaziah, YHWH has broken your works." And the ships were broken, and they were not able to go to Tarshish.
