1And a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, "Your servant my husband (ish) is dead, and you know that your servant was one who feared YHWH; and the creditor has come to take my two children for himself to be servants."
2And Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil."
3And he said, "Go, ask for yourself vessels from outside, from all your neighbors, empty vessels; do not get few.
4And you shall go in and shut the door behind you and behind your sons, and pour out into all these vessels; and the full one you shall set aside."
5And she went from him and shut the door behind her and behind her sons; they were bringing to her, and she was pouring out.
6And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, "Bring me yet a vessel." And he said to her, "There is not a vessel more." And the oil stopped.
7And she came and told the man (ish) of God, and he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons shall live on what is left."
8And it came to pass on a day, that Elisha passed over to Shunem, and there was a great woman, and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, as often as he passed by, he turned in there to eat bread.
9And she said to her husband (ish), "Behold now, I know that this is a holy man (ish) of God who passes by us continually.
10Let us make, please, a little upper chamber on the wall, and let us set for him there a bed and a table and a chair and a lampstand; and it shall be, when he comes to us, that he shall turn in there."
11And it came to pass on a day, that he came there, and he turned into the upper chamber and lay there.
12And he said to Gehazi his lad, "Call this Shunammite." And he called her, and she stood before him.
13And he said to him, "Say now to her, 'Behold, you have been anxious for us with all this anxiety; what is to be done for you? Is there a word to speak for you to the king or to the captain of the army?'" And she said, "I am dwelling among my own people."
14And he said, "What then is to be done for her?" And Gehazi said, "Truly she has no son, and her husband (ish) is old."
15And he said, "Call her." And he called her, and she stood in the doorway.
16And he said, "At this appointed time (moed), about the time of life (chai), you shall embrace a son." And she said, "No, my lord, man (ish) of God, do not lie to your maidservant."
17And the woman conceived and bore a son at this appointed time (moed), about the time of life (chai), as Elisha had said to her.
18And the child grew, and it came to pass on a day, that he went out to his father, to the reapers.
19And he said to his father, "My head, my head!" And he said to the lad, "Carry him to his mother."
20And he carried him and brought him to his mother, and he sat on her knees until noon, and then he died.
21And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man (ish) of God, and shut the door behind him, and went out.
22And she called to her husband (ish) and said, "Send to me, please, one of the lads and one of the donkeys, that I may run to the man (ish) of God and return."
23And he said, "Why are you going to him today? It is neither new moon nor Shabbat." And she said, "It is well."
24And she saddled the donkey and said to her lad, "Drive and go; do not hold back the riding for me unless I tell you."
25And she went and came to the man (ish) of God, to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man (ish) of God saw her from afar, that he said to Gehazi his lad, "Behold, that Shunammite!
26Now run, please, to meet her, and say to her, 'Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband (ish)? Is it well with the child?'" And she said, "It is well."
27And she came to the man (ish) of God, to the hill, and caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came near to thrust her away, but the man (ish) of God said, "Let her alone, for her soul (nephesh) is bitter within her; and YHWH has hidden it from me and has not told me."
28And she said, "Did I ask for a son from my lord? Did I not say, 'Do not deceive me'?"
29And he said to Gehazi, "Gird your loins and take my staff in your hand and go; if you meet a man (ish), do not bless him, and if a man (ish) blesses you, do not answer him; and you shall lay my staff upon the face of the lad."
30And the mother of the lad said, "As YHWH lives (chai), and as your soul (nephesh) lives (chai), I will not leave you." And he arose and went after her.
31And Gehazi passed over before them and laid the staff upon the face of the lad, but there was no voice and no attention. And he returned to meet him and told him, saying, "The lad has not awakened."
32And Elisha came into the house, and behold, the lad was dead, laid upon his bed.
33And he went in and shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to YHWH.
34And he went up and lay upon the child and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his palms upon his palms; and he stretched himself upon him, and the flesh (basar) of the child grew warm.
35And he returned and walked in the house, once here and once there, and he went up and stretched himself upon him; and the lad sneezed seven times, and the lad opened his eyes.
36And he called to Gehazi and said, "Call this Shunammite." And he called her, and she came to him, and he said, "Take up your son."
37And she came and fell at his feet and bowed down to the ground, and she took up her son and went out.
38And Elisha returned to Gilgal, and the famine was in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him, and he said to his lad, "Set on the great pot and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets."
39And one went out to the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered from it wild gourds, the fullness of his garment; and he came and split them into the pot of pottage, for they did not know them.
40And they poured out for the men (ish) to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating from the pottage, that they cried out and said, "Death is in the pot, O man (ish) of God!" And they could not eat.
41And he said, "Then bring meal." And he threw it into the pot, and he said, "Pour out for the people, that they may eat." And there was no harmful thing in the pot.
42And a man (ish) came from Baal-shalishah and brought to the man (ish) of God bread of firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh grain in his sack. And he said, "Give to the people, that they may eat."
43And his attendant said, "What, shall I set this before a hundred men (ish)?" And he said, "Give to the people, that they may eat; for thus says YHWH, 'They shall eat and have some left over.'"
44And he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of YHWH.
