1And Jehoram the son of Ahab reigned over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years.
2And he did the evil in the eyes of YHWH, only not like his father and like his mother; and he removed the pillar of Baal which his father had made.
3Only to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, he clung; he did not turn from it.
4And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master, and he rendered to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs and a hundred thousand rams of wool.
5And it came to pass, when Ahab died, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6And king Jehoram went out in that day from Samaria, and he mustered all Israel.
7And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, "The king of Moab has rebelled against me; will you go with me against Moab to battle?" And he said, "I will go up; I am as you, my people as your people, my horses as your horses."
8And he said, "Which way shall we go up?" And he said, "The way of the wilderness of Edom."
9And the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they went around a journey of seven days; and there was no water for the camp and for the cattle that were at their feet.
10And the king of Israel said, "Alas! for YHWH has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab."
11And Jehoshaphat said, "Is there not here a prophet of YHWH, that we may inquire of YHWH by him?" And one of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said, "Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah."
12And Jehoshaphat said, "The word of YHWH is with him." And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13And Elisha said to the king of Israel, "What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother." And the king of Israel said to him, "No; for YHWH has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab."
14And Elisha said, "As YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) lives (chai), before whom I stand, surely were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look toward you nor see you.
15And now bring me a minstrel." And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of YHWH came upon him.
16And he said, "Thus says YHWH: Make this valley full of trenches, trenches.
17For thus says YHWH: You shall not see spirit (ruach), and you shall not see rain, yet that valley shall be filled with water, and you shall drink, you and your livestock and your beasts.
18And this is a light thing in the eyes of YHWH; and He will give Moab into your hand.
19And you shall strike every fortified city and every choice city, and you shall fell every good tree and stop up all springs of water, and every good portion of land you shall mar with stones."
20And it came to pass in the morning, about the going up of the offering, that behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the land was filled with the water.
21And all Moab heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, and they were summoned, everyone girding a girdle and upward, and they stood at the border.
22And they rose early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the waters, and Moab saw the waters opposite, red like blood.
23And they said, "This is blood! The kings have surely been destroyed, and they have struck each man (ish) his fellow. And now, to the spoil, Moab!"
24And they came to the camp of Israel, and Israel rose up and struck Moab, and they fled before them; and they came into it, striking Moab.
25And they tore down the cities, and on every good portion of land each man (ish) cast his stone and filled it; and every spring of water they stopped up, and every good tree they felled, until only its stones were left in Kir-hareseth; and the slingers surrounded it and struck it.
26And the king of Moab saw that the battle was too strong for him, and he took with him seven hundred men (ish) drawing the sword, to break through to the king of Edom, but they could not.
27And he took his firstborn son who was to reign in his stead, and offered him up as a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great wrath upon Israel, and they departed from him and returned to the land.
