1In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar the king, a vision appeared to me, I Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first.
2And I saw in the vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was in Shushan the castle, which is in Elam the province; and I saw in the vision, and I was by the stream Ulai.
3And I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, a ram standing before the stream, and it had two horns; and the two horns were high, but the one was higher than the second, and the higher came up last.
4I saw the ram pushing westward and northward and southward, and no beasts could stand before it, and there was none delivering from its hand; and it did according to its will and made itself great.
5And I was considering, and behold, a he-goat of the goats came from the west over the face of all the earth, and it touched not the ground; and the goat had a conspicuous horn between its eyes.
6And it came to the ram that had the two horns, which I had seen standing before the stream, and it ran at it in the fury of its power.
7And I saw it reaching beside the ram, and it was enraged against it, and it struck the ram and broke its two horns; and there was no power in the ram to stand before it. And it cast it to the ground and trampled it, and there was none delivering the ram from its hand.
8And the he-goat made itself exceedingly great; but when it was strong, the great horn was broken, and instead of it came up the appearance of four toward the four spirits (ruach) of the heavens.
9And out of one of them came forth one little horn, and it grew exceedingly great toward the south and toward the east and toward the beauty.
10And it grew great even to the host of the heavens, and it cast down to the ground some of the host and of the stars, and trampled them.
11And even to the prince of the host it made itself great, and from it the continual was taken away, and the place of its sanctuary was cast down.
12And a host was given over against the continual through transgression; and it cast truth to the ground, and it acted and prospered.
13And I heard one holy one speaking, and another holy one said to that certain one who was speaking, "Until when is the vision of the continual, and the transgression that desolates, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled?"
14And he said to me, "Until two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary shall be justified."
15And it came to pass, when I, I Daniel, saw the vision, that I sought understanding; and behold, standing before me was like the appearance of a man.
16And I heard the voice of a man (adam) between the banks of Ulai, and it called and said, "Gabriel, make this one understand the vision."
17And it came beside where I stood, and when it came I was terrified and fell upon my face; and it said to me, "Understand, son of man (adam), for the vision is for the time of the end."
18And as it was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep upon my face to the ground; but it touched me and set me up where I had stood.
19And it said, "Behold, I am making known to you what shall be in the latter time of the indignation, for it is for the appointed time (moed) of the end.
20The ram which you saw having the two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.
21And the he-goat, the shaggy one, is the king of Greece; and the great horn that is between its eyes is the first king.
22And the broken one, and four stood up in its place: four kingdoms shall stand up from the nation, but not with its power.
23And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors have completed, a king of fierce face, understanding riddles, shall stand up.
24And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power; and he shall destroy wonderfully, and he shall prosper and act; and he shall destroy mighty ones and the people of the holy ones.
25And through his cunning he shall make deceit prosper in his hand, and in his heart he shall make himself great, and in security he shall destroy many. And against the Prince of princes he shall stand up, but without hand he shall be broken.
26And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true; but you, shut up the vision, for it is for many days.
27And I, Daniel, was overcome and was sick for days; then I rose up and did the king's business, and I was appalled at the vision, and there was none understanding.
