1In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans —
2in the first year of his reign, I Daniel understood by the books the number of the years, of which the word of YHWH came to Jeremiah the prophet, to fulfill for the desolations of Jerusalem seventy years.
3And I set my face to my Lord (Adonai) the God, to seek prayer and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.
4And I prayed to YHWH my God, and I made confession and said, "Ah now, my Lord (Adonai), the great and awesome God, keeping the covenant (berit) and the mercy for those who love him and for those who keep his commandments (mitzvot):
5we have sinned and have done iniquity, we have done wickedly and have rebelled, even turning aside from your commandments (mitzvot) and from your judgments (mishpat).
6And we have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
7To you, my Lord (Adonai), is the righteousness, but to us is the shame of face, as at this day — to the man (ish) of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, those near and those far off, in all the lands where you have driven them, because of their treachery that they committed against you.
8O YHWH, to us is the shame of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you.
9To my Lord (Adonai) our God belong the mercies and the forgivenesses, for we have rebelled against him,
10and we have not listened to the voice of YHWH our God, to walk in his Torah, which he set before us by the hand of his servants the prophets.
11And all Israel have transgressed your Torah, even turning aside so as not to listen to your voice; and there has been poured out upon us the curse and the oath that is written in the Torah of Moses the servant of God, for we have sinned against him.
12And he has confirmed his word, which he spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us great evil, such as has not been done under all the heavens as has been done in Jerusalem.
13As it is written in the Torah of Moses, all this evil has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the face of YHWH our God, to turn from our iniquities and to give heed to your truth.
14And YHWH has watched over the evil and brought it upon us, for YHWH our God is righteous in all his works which he has done; and we have not listened to his voice.
15And now, my Lord (Adonai) our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand, and made for yourself a name, as at this day — we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
16My Lord (Adonai), according to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your fury, I pray, turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people are a reproach to all those around us.
17And now, hear, O our God, the prayer of your servant and his supplications, and cause your face to shine upon your sanctuary that is desolate, for my Lord's (Adonai) sake.
18Incline, O my God, your ear and hear; open your eyes and see our desolations and the city upon which your name is called; for not because of our righteousness do we cast down our supplications before you, but because of your many mercies.
19My Lord (Adonai), hear; my Lord (Adonai), forgive; my Lord (Adonai), attend and act; do not delay, for your own sake, O my God, for your name is called upon your city and upon your people.
20And while I was still speaking and praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and casting down my supplication before YHWH my God for the holy mountain of my God,
21while I was still speaking in the prayer, the man (ish) Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening offering.
22And he made me understand, and he spoke with me and said, "Daniel, now I have come forth to give you skill of understanding.
23At the beginning of your supplications a word went forth, and I have come to declare it, for you are greatly beloved; so consider the word, and understand the vision.
24Seventy weeks are decreed upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgression, and to seal up sins, and to atone for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal vision and prophet, and to anoint a holy of holies.
25Know therefore and understand: from the going forth of the word to restore and to build Jerusalem until Messiah the prince are seven weeks; and for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again, with broad place and moat, but in the distress of the times.
26And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off and have nothing; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the holy place; and its end shall be with a flood, and to the end of the war desolations are determined.
27And he shall make a covenant (berit) strong for the many for one week; and in the midst of the week he shall cause sacrifice and offering to cease; and upon a wing of detestable things shall be one who desolates, even until the determined full end is poured out upon the desolate.
