1When one slain is found in the ground (adamah) which YHWH your God gives you to possess it, fallen in the field, it is not known who struck him,
2then your elders and your judges shall go out, and they shall measure to the cities which are around the slain one.
3And it shall be that the city nearest to the slain one — even the elders of that city shall take a heifer of the herd, which has not been worked (avad) with, which has not drawn in the yoke,
4and the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer to an ever-flowing valley, which is not worked (avad) and is not sown, and they shall break the neck of the heifer there in the valley.
5And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall draw near — for them YHWH your God has chosen to minister to him, and to bless in the name of YHWH; and according to their mouth shall be every dispute and every stroke.
6And all the elders of that city, who are nearest to the slain one, shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley,
7and they shall answer and say, "Our hands have not shed this blood, and our eyes have not seen.
8Atone for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, O YHWH, and do not put innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel." And the blood shall be atoned for them.
9And you shall put away the innocent blood from your midst, when you do that which is right in the eyes of YHWH.
10When you go out to the battle against your enemies, and YHWH your God gives him into your hand, and you take captive his captivity,
11and you see among the captives a woman (ishah) of beautiful form, and you desire her, and you take her to yourself for a wife (ishah),
12then you shall bring her into the midst of your house, and she shall shave her head and do her nails,
13and she shall remove the garment of her captivity from upon her, and she shall dwell in your house, and bewail her father and her mother a month of days; and after that you shall come to her and be her husband, and she shall become to you for a wife (ishah).
14And it shall be, if you have no delight in her, then you shall send her away to her soul (nephesh); and you shall not sell her at all for money; you shall not deal with her as a slave, because you have humbled her.
15If a man (ish) has two wives (ishah), the one loved and the one hated, and they bear him sons, the loved and the hated, and the firstborn son is the hated one's,
16then it shall be, in the day that he causes his sons to inherit what he has, he is not able to make the son of the loved one the firstborn over the face of the son of the hated, the firstborn.
17But the firstborn, the son of the hated, he shall acknowledge, to give him a mouth of two (a double portion) of all that is found with him; for he is the first of his strength; to him is the judgment (mishpat) of the firstborn.
18If a man (ish) has a stubborn and rebellious son, who does not listen to the voice of his father and the voice of his mother, and they chasten him but he does not listen to them,
19then his father and his mother shall lay hold on him and bring him out to the elders of his city and to the gate of his place,
20and they shall say to the elders of his city, "This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he does not listen to our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard."
21And all the men (ish) of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die; so you shall put away the evil from your midst; and all Israel shall hear and fear.
22And if there is in a man (ish) a sin, a judgment (mishpat) of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree,
23his corpse shall not remain overnight on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on that day; for a curse of God is one hanged; and you shall not defile your ground (adamah) which YHWH your God gives you for an inheritance.
