1And he commanded (tzivvah) him who was over his house, saying, "Fill the men's (ish) sacks with food, as much as they are able to carry, and put each man's (ish) money in the mouth of his sack.
2And my goblet, the goblet of silver, you shall put in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and the money for his grain." And he did according to the word of Joseph which he had spoken.
3The morning was light, and the men (ish) were sent away, they and their donkeys.
4They had gone out of the city — they had not gone far — when Joseph said to him who was over his house, "Arise, pursue after the men (ish); and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you repaid evil for good?
5Is not this the one in which my lord drinks, and by which he indeed divines? You have done evil in what you have done.'"
6And he overtook them, and spoke to them these words.
7And they said to him, "Why does my lord speak according to these words? Far be it from your servants to do according to this thing.
8Behold, the money which we found in the mouth of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan; how then should we steal from your lord's house silver or gold?
9With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and also we ourselves will be servants to my lord."
10And he said, "Now also, according to your words, so let it be: he with whom it is found shall be my servant, and you shall be blameless."
11And they hastened, and each man (ish) took down his sack to the ground, and each man (ish) opened his sack.
12And he searched — at the eldest he began, and at the youngest he finished — and the goblet was found in Benjamin's sack.
13And they tore their garments, and each man (ish) loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city.
14And Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, and he was still there; and they fell before him to the ground.
15And Joseph said to them, "What deed is this that you have done? Did you not know that a man (ish) such as I would indeed divine?"
16And Judah said, "What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? And how shall we justify ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are servants to my lord, both we and he in whose hand the goblet was found."
17And he said, "Far be it from me to do this; the man (ish) in whose hand the goblet was found, he shall be my servant; but as for you, go up in peace to your father."
18And Judah came near to him, and said, "Oh, my lord, let your servant, I pray, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Pharaoh.
19My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Have you a father or a brother?'
20And we said to my lord, 'We have an old father, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.'
21And you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me, that I may set my eye upon him.'
22And we said to my lord, 'The lad cannot leave his father; for if he leaves his father, he will die.'
23And you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.'
24And it came to pass, when we went up to your servant my father, that we told him the words of my lord.
25And our father said, 'Return, buy us a little food.'
26And we said, 'We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man's (ish) face if our youngest brother is not with us.'
27And your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife (ishah) bore me two;
28and the one went out from me, and I said, "Surely he is torn, torn in pieces"; and I have not seen him until now.
29And if you take this one also from before my face, and harm befalls him, you will bring down my gray hairs in evil to Sheol.'
30And now, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us — and his soul (nephesh) is bound up with his soul (nephesh) —
31it will come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not, that he will die; and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father in sorrow to Sheol.
32For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him to you, then I will have sinned against my father all the days.'
33And now, let your servant, I pray, remain instead of the lad as a servant to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers.
34For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me? — lest I look upon the evil that would find my father."
