1The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
2Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for YHWH has spoken: Sons I have reared and raised up, and they have rebelled against Me.
3The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master's crib; Israel does not know, My people does not consider.
4Woe, a sinning nation, a people heavy with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, sons acting corruptly; they have forsaken YHWH, they have spurned the Holy One of Israel (qedosh yisrael), they have turned away backward.
5Upon what will you yet be struck, that you continue to revolt? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
6From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it; a wound, and a bruise, and a fresh blow; they have not been pressed out, nor bound up, nor softened with oil.
7Your land is a desolation, your cities are burned with fire; your ground (adamah)—before you strangers are devouring it, and it is a desolation, like the overthrow of strangers.
8And the daughter of Zion is left as a booth in a vineyard, as a lodge in a cucumber field, as a besieged city.
9Unless YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) had left us a remnant, very small, we would have been like Sodom, we would have resembled Gomorrah.
10Hear the word of YHWH, you rulers of Sodom; give ear to the Torah of our God, you people of Gomorrah.
11For what to Me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says YHWH. I am sated with burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fatlings; and in the blood of bulls and lambs and he-goats I do not delight.
12When you come to appear before My face, who has required this from your hand, to trample My courts?
13You shall not continue to bring a vain offering; incense is an abomination to Me; new moon and Shabbat, the calling of a convocation—I cannot endure iniquity with the solemn assembly.
14Your new moons and your appointed times (moadim) My soul (nephesh) hates; they have become a burden upon Me; I am weary to bear them.
15And when you spread out your palms, I hide My eyes from you; also when you multiply prayer, I do not hear; your hands are full of blood.
16Wash yourselves, purify yourselves, remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes; cease to do evil;
17Learn to do good; seek judgment (mishpat), set right the oppressed, judge the orphan, plead for the widow.
18Come now, and let us reason together, says YHWH; though your sins be like scarlet, they shall be white like snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be like wool.
19If you are willing and obey, you shall eat the good of the land;
20But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of YHWH has spoken.
21How has the faithful city become a harlot! She that was full of judgment (mishpat), righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers.
22Your silver has become dross, your wine is mixed with water.
23Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves; every one loves a bribe, and pursues rewards; they do not judge the orphan, and the cause of the widow does not come to them.
24Therefore declares the Lord (ha-Adon), YHWH of hosts (tzevaot), the Mighty One of Israel: Ah, I will be eased of My adversaries, and avenge Myself of My enemies;
25And I will turn My hand upon you, and refine away your dross as with lye, and remove all your alloy;
26And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning; afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, a faithful city.
27Zion shall be redeemed with judgment (mishpat), and her returning ones with righteousness.
28And the shattering of transgressors and sinners shall be together, and those forsaking YHWH shall be consumed.
29For they shall be ashamed of the terebinths which you desired, and you shall be confounded for the gardens which you chose.
30For you shall be like a terebinth whose leaf withers, and like a garden that has no water.
31And the strong shall be as tow, and his work as a spark; and both of them shall burn together, and there shall be none quenching.
