1The burden of the Valley of Vision. What ails you now, that you have gone up, all of you, to the housetops,
2full of tumults, a noisy city, an exultant town? Your slain are not slain of the sword, nor dead of battle.
3All your rulers have fled together, without the bow they were bound; all who were found of you were bound together, they had fled afar off.
4Therefore I said, "Look away from me, let me weep bitterly; do not press to comfort me over the destruction of the daughter of my people."
5For it is a day of tumult and trampling and confusion to my Lord (Adonai) YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) in the Valley of Vision, tearing down the wall and crying to the mountain.
6And Elam bore the quiver, with the chariot of man (adam), horsemen; and Kir uncovered the shield.
7And it came to pass, your choicest valleys were full of chariots, and the horsemen stationed themselves, stationed at the gate.
8And he uncovered the covering of Judah, and you looked in that day to the weaponry of the house of the forest.
9And the breaches of the city of David you saw, that they were many; and you gathered the waters of the lower pool.
10And the houses of Jerusalem you counted, and you broke down the houses to fortify the wall.
11And a reservoir you made between the two walls for the waters of the old pool; but you did not look to its Maker, nor did you see the One who fashioned it long ago.
12And my Lord (Adonai) YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) called in that day to weeping and to mourning, and to baldness and to girding with sackcloth.
13And behold, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating meat (basar) and drinking wine: "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!"
14And it was revealed in my ears by YHWH of hosts (tzevaot): "Surely this iniquity will not be atoned for you until you die," said my Lord (Adonai) YHWH of hosts (tzevaot).
15Thus said my Lord (Adonai) YHWH of hosts (tzevaot), "Go, come to this steward, to Shebna, who is over the house:
16What to you here, and who to you here, that you have hewn for yourself here a grave, hewing on high his grave, carving in the rock a dwelling-place (mishkan) for himself?
17Behold, YHWH will hurl you, a hurling, O mighty man, and he will wrap you, wrapping.
18Wrapping he will wind you, a winding, like a ball into a land wide of hands; there you will die, and there the chariots of your glory, O shame of the house of your lord.
19And I will thrust you from your station, and from your post he will pull you down.
20And it will be in that day that I will call to my servant, to Eliakim son of Hilkiah.
21And I will clothe him with your tunic, and your sash I will strengthen on him, and your dominion I will give into his hand; and he will be a father to the inhabitant of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
22And I will give the key of the house of David upon his shoulder; and he will open and none will shut, and he will shut and none will open.
23And I will fasten him as a peg in a sure place; and he will be for a throne of honor to the house of his father.
24And they will hang upon him all the glory of the house of his father, the offspring and the issue, all the vessels of small size, from the vessels of bowls even to all the vessels of jars.
25In that day, declaration of YHWH of hosts (tzevaot), the peg fastened in a sure place will give way, and it will be cut down and fall, and the burden that was upon it will be cut off; for YHWH has spoken.
