1The burden of Tyre. Howl, O ships of Tarshish, for it is laid waste, without house, without entrance; from the land of Kittim it is revealed to them.
2Be still, O inhabitants of the coastland; the merchant of Sidon, crossing the sea, they filled you.
3And on great waters the seed of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue; and she was the marketplace of nations.
4Be ashamed, O Sidon, for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, "I have not travailed and have not given birth, and I have not raised young men, nor brought up virgins."
5As at the report concerning Egypt, they will writhe at the report of Tyre.
6Cross over to Tarshish; howl, O inhabitants of the coastland.
7Is this your exultant one, whose antiquity is from days of old, whose feet carry her afar off to sojourn?
8Who has counseled this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traders are the honored of the earth?
9YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) has counseled it, to profane the pride of all beauty, to bring into contempt all the honored of the earth.
10Pass through your land like the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish; there is no restraint any more.
11His hand he stretched out over the sea, he made kingdoms tremble; YHWH commanded (tzivvah) concerning Canaan to destroy her strongholds.
12And he said, "You will not add anymore to exult, O oppressed one, virgin daughter of Sidon. Arise, cross over to Kittim; even there it will not be rest for you."
13Behold, the land of the Chaldeans, this is the people that was not; Assyria founded it for desert-dwellers; they raised its siege-towers, they stripped its palaces; he made it a ruin.
14Howl, O ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is laid waste.
15And it will be in that day that Tyre will be forgotten seventy years, like the days of one king; at the end of seventy years it will be for Tyre like the song of the harlot:
16"Take a harp, go around the city, O forgotten harlot; play well, multiply song, that you may be remembered."
17And it will be at the end of seventy years that YHWH will visit Tyre, and she will return to her hire, and she will play the harlot with all the kingdoms of the earth upon the face of the ground (adamah).
18And her merchandise and her hire will be holiness to YHWH; it will not be stored up nor hoarded; for her merchandise will be for those who dwell before YHWH, to eat to fullness and for fine covering.
