1And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked of YHWH, saying: "Who shall go up for us against the Canaanite at the first, to fight against him?"
2And YHWH said: "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand."
3And Judah said to Simeon his brother: "Come up with me into my lot, and let us fight against the Canaanite; and I also will go with you into your lot." So Simeon went with him.
4And Judah went up, and YHWH gave the Canaanite and the Perizzite into their hand; and they smote them in Bezek, ten thousand men (ish).
5And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek, and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanite and the Perizzite.
6And Adoni-bezek fled, and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off the thumbs of his hands and his feet.
7And Adoni-bezek said: "Seventy kings, with the thumbs of their hands and their feet cut off, were gathering under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and captured it, and smote it to the mouth of the sword, and the city they set on fire.
9And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanite dwelling in the hill country, and the Negev, and the lowland.
10And Judah went against the Canaanite dwelling in Hebron — now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba — and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11And he went from there against the inhabitants of Debir — now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher.
12And Caleb said: "He who smites Kiriath-sepher and captures it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter for a wife (ishah)."
13And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife (ishah).
14And it came to pass, when she came, that she incited him to ask of her father a field; and she alighted from off the donkey; and Caleb said to her: "What do you want?"
15And she said to him: "Give me a blessing; for you have given me the land of the Negev, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
16And the children of the Kenite, the father-in-law of Moses, went up from the city of palms with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the Negev of Arad; and he went and dwelt with the people.
17And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanite dwelling in Zephath, and utterly destroyed it; and the name of the city was called Hormah.
18And Judah captured Gaza and its border, and Ashkelon and its border, and Ekron and its border.
19And YHWH was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country; but he did not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had spoken; and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.
21And the Jebusite dwelling in Jerusalem the children of Benjamin did not drive out; but the Jebusite dwelt with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this day.
22And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel; and YHWH was with them.
23And the house of Joseph spied out Bethel — now the name of the city formerly was Luz.
24And the watchers saw a man (ish) coming out of the city, and they said to him: "Show us, please, the entrance of the city, and we will deal kindly with you."
25And he showed them the entrance of the city; and they smote the city to the mouth of the sword, but the man (ish) and all his family they let go.
26And the man (ish) went to the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz; that is its name until this day.
27And Manasseh did not drive out Beth-shean and its daughters, nor Taanach and its daughters, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its daughters, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its daughters, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its daughters; but the Canaanite was determined to dwell in that land.
28And it came to pass, when Israel grew strong, that he put the Canaanite to forced labor, but he did not at all drive him out.
29And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanite dwelling in Gezer; but the Canaanite dwelt in his midst in Gezer.
30Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanite dwelt in his midst, and became forced labor.
31Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor Ahlab, nor Achzib, nor Helbah, nor Aphik, nor Rehob;
32but the Asherite dwelt among the Canaanite, the inhabitants of the land; for he did not drive them out.
33Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanite, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath became forced labor for them.
34And the Amorite pressed the children of Dan into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the valley.
35And the Amorite was determined to dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; but the hand of the house of Joseph grew heavy, and they became forced labor.
36And the border of the Amorite was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.
