1And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called to the elders of Israel, and to its heads, and to its judges, and to its officers; and they presented themselves before God.
2And Joshua said to all the people: "Thus says YHWH, the God of Israel: Beyond the River your fathers dwelt of old, Terah the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor; and they served (avad) other gods.
3And I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
4And I gave to Isaac Jacob and Esau; and I gave to Esau mount Seir, to possess it; and Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
5And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in its midst; and afterward I brought you out.
6And I brought your fathers out of Egypt; and you came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen to the Sea of Reeds.
7And they cried out to YHWH, and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt; and you dwelt in the wilderness many days.
8And I brought you to the land of the Amorite, that dwelt beyond the Jordan; and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand, and you possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
9And Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel; and he sent and called to Balaam the son of Beor to curse you.
10But I was not willing to listen to Balaam; and he even blessed you; and I delivered you out of his hand.
11And you passed over the Jordan, and came to Jericho; and the lords of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I gave them into your hand.
12And I sent before you the hornet, and it drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorite; not with your sword, nor with your bow.
13And I gave you a land for which you had not labored, and cities which you built not, and you dwell in them; of vineyards and olive-trees which you planted not you eat.
14And now fear YHWH, and serve (avad) Him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served (avad) beyond the River, and in Egypt; and serve (avad) YHWH.
15And if it be evil in your eyes to serve (avad) YHWH, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve (avad), whether the gods which your fathers served (avad) that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorite, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve (avad) YHWH."
16And the people answered and said: "Far be it from us that we should forsake YHWH, to serve (avad) other gods;
17for YHWH our God, He it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slaves; and that did before our eyes those great signs (ot), and kept us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the peoples through whose midst we passed;
18and YHWH drove out all the peoples, even the Amorite that dwelt in the land, from before us; we also will serve (avad) YHWH, for He is our God."
19And Joshua said to the people: "You are not able to serve (avad) YHWH; for He is a holy God; He is a jealous God (El); He will not bear your transgression nor your sins.
20If you forsake YHWH, and serve (avad) foreign gods, then He will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after that He has done you good."
21And the people said to Joshua: "No; but YHWH will we serve (avad)."
22And Joshua said to the people: "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen for yourselves YHWH, to serve (avad) Him." And they said: "We are witnesses."
23"And now put away the foreign gods which are in your midst, and incline your heart to YHWH, the God of Israel."
24And the people said to Joshua: "YHWH our God will we serve (avad), and to His voice will we hearken."
25And Joshua cut a covenant (berit) for the people in that day, and set for them a statute (choq) and a judgment (mishpat) in Shechem.
26And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the Torah of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of YHWH.
27And Joshua said to all the people: "Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all the sayings of YHWH which He spoke with us; and it shall be a witness against you, lest you deny your God."
28And Joshua sent the people away, every man (ish) to his inheritance.
29And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of YHWH, died, being a hundred and ten years old.
30And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.
31And Israel served (avad) YHWH all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who prolonged their days after Joshua, and who had known all the work of YHWH, which He had done for Israel.
32And the bones of Joseph, which the sons of Israel brought up out of Egypt, they buried in Shechem, in the parcel of the field which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money; and they became to the sons of Joseph for an inheritance.
33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given to him in the hill-country of Ephraim.
