1And these are the nations which YHWH left, to test Israel by them, all who had not known any of the wars of Canaan;
2only in order that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, only those who formerly had not known them.
3namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanite, and the Sidonian, and the Hivite dwelling in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon to the entrance of Hamath.
4And they were there to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to the commandments (mitzvah) of YHWH, which He commanded (tzivvah) their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5And the children of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite;
6and they took their daughters for themselves for wives (ishah), and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served (avad) their gods.
7And the children of Israel did the evil in the eyes of YHWH, and forgot YHWH their God, and served (avad) the Baalim and the Asheroth.
8And the anger of YHWH burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram-naharaim; and the children of Israel served (avad) Cushan-rishathaim eight years.
9And the children of Israel cried out to YHWH, and YHWH raised up a savior for the children of Israel, and he saved (yasha) them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
10And the spirit (ruach) of YHWH was upon him, and he judged Israel, and he went out to war, and YHWH gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.
11And the land was quiet forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12And the children of Israel again did the evil in the eyes of YHWH; and YHWH strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they did the evil in the eyes of YHWH.
13And he gathered to him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palms.
14And the children of Israel served (avad) Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
15And the children of Israel cried out to YHWH, and YHWH raised up for them a savior, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man (ish) bound in his right hand; and the children of Israel sent by his hand a present to Eglon the king of Moab.
16And Ehud made for himself a sword, and it had two edges, a cubit its length; and he girded it under his garments upon his right thigh.
17And he brought near the present to Eglon king of Moab — now Eglon was a very fat man (ish).
18And it came to pass, when he had finished offering the present, that he sent away the people bearing the present.
19But he himself turned back from the carved images which were by Gilgal, and said: "I have a secret word for you, O king." And he said: "Hush!" And all who stood by him went out from him.
20And Ehud came to him, and he was sitting in the cool upper chamber which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said: "I have a word of God for you." And he arose from upon the seat.
21And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from upon his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly.
22And the haft also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and it came out at the rear.
23And Ehud went out into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper chamber behind him, and locked them.
24And he went out; and his servants came, and they saw, and behold, the doors of the upper chamber were locked; and they said: "Surely he is covering his feet in the cool chamber."
25And they waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he did not open the doors of the upper chamber; so they took the key and opened them, and behold, their lord was fallen to the earth, dead.
26And Ehud escaped while they delayed, and he passed beyond the carved images, and escaped to Seirah.
27And it came to pass, when he came, that he blew the horn in the hill country of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he before them.
28And he said to them: "Pursue after me, for YHWH has given your enemies, Moab, into your hand." And they went down after him, and captured the fords of the Jordan toward Moab, and did not allow a man (ish) to pass over.
29And they smote Moab at that time, about ten thousand men (ish), every robust one and every man (ish) of valor; and not a man (ish) escaped.
30And Moab was subdued on that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was quiet eighty years.
31And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, and he smote of the Philistines six hundred men (ish) with an ox-goad; and he also saved (yasha) Israel.
