Concerning Moab. Thus says YHWH of hosts (tzevaot), the God of Israel: Woe to Nebo, for it is spoiled! Kiriathaim is put to shame, it is captured; the stronghold is put to shame and shattered.
No more is the praise of Moab; in Heshbon they have devised evil against her: "Come, and let us cut her off from being a nation." You too, O Madmen, shall be silenced; after you the sword shall go.
A voice of crying from Horonaim, spoiling and great destruction!
Moab is broken; her little ones have made a cry heard.
For at the ascent of Luhith with weeping they go up weeping; for at the descent of Horonaim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction.
Flee, save your soul (nephesh), and be like a juniper in the wilderness.
For because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you too shall be captured; and Chemosh shall go forth into exile, his priests and his princes together.
And the spoiler shall come against every city, and no city shall escape; the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as YHWH has said.
Give wings to Moab, for she must surely fly away; and her cities shall become a desolation, without any inhabitant in them.
Cursed be he who does the work of YHWH with slackness, and cursed be he who withholds his sword from blood.
Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, and into exile he has not gone; therefore his taste has remained in him, and his scent is not changed.
Therefore behold, days are coming, declares YHWH, that I will send to him tilters, and they shall tilt him, and they shall empty his vessels, and shatter their jars.
And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel their confidence.
How can you say, "We are mighty men, and men (ish) of valor for the war"?
Moab is spoiled, and they have gone up against her cities, and the choicest of his young men have gone down to the slaughter, declares the King, YHWH of hosts (tzevaot) is his name.
The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hastens very fast.
Bemoan him, all you who are around him, and all you who know his name; say, "How is the staff of strength broken, the rod of beauty!"
Come down from glory and sit in thirst, O inhabitant, daughter of Dibon; for the spoiler of Moab has come up against you, he has destroyed your strongholds.
Stand by the way and watch, O inhabitant of Aroer; ask him who flees, and her who escapes; say, "What has happened?"
Moab is put to shame, for it is shattered; wail and cry out; declare it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled.
And judgment (mishpat) has come upon the land of the plain, upon Holon, and upon Jahzah, and upon Mephaath,
and upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Beth-diblathaim,
and upon Kiriathaim, and upon Beth-gamul, and upon Beth-meon,
and upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, the far and the near.
The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, declares YHWH.
Make him drunk, for against YHWH he has magnified himself; and Moab shall splash in his vomit, and he too shall become a derision.
And was not Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves? For as often as you speak of him, you shake your head.
Leave the cities and dwell in the rock, O inhabitants of Moab; and be like a dove that nests in the sides of the pit's mouth.
We have heard of the pride of Moab, he is very proud, his loftiness, and his pride, and his arrogance, and the haughtiness of his heart.
I know, declares YHWH, his fury, and it is not so; his boastings, not so have they done.
Therefore I will wail for Moab, and for all Moab I will cry out; for the men (ish) of Kir-heres he moans.
With more than the weeping of Jazer I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah; your branches passed over the sea, as far as the sea of Jazer they reached; upon your summer fruits and upon your vintage the spoiler has fallen.
And gladness and joy are gathered away from the fruitful field and from the land of Moab; and I have caused the wine to shabbat from the winepresses; none shall tread with shouting, the shout shall be no shout.
From the cry of Heshbon to Elealeh, to Jahaz they have uttered their voice, from Zoar to Horonaim, to Eglath-shelishiyah; for the waters of Nimrim also shall become desolations.
And I will cause to shabbat in Moab, declares YHWH, the one who offers on the high place and the one who burns incense to his gods.
Therefore my heart moans for Moab like flutes, and my heart moans for the men (ish) of Kir-heres like flutes; therefore the abundance he gained has perished.
For every head is bald, and every beard clipped; upon all hands are gashes, and upon the loins sackcloth.
On all the housetops of Moab and in her broad places, all of it is lamentation; for I have broken Moab like a vessel in which there is no delight, declares YHWH.
How it is shattered! Wail! How Moab has turned the back in shame! So Moab has become a derision and a terror to all around him.
For thus says YHWH: Behold, like an eagle he shall swoop, and spread out his wings toward Moab.
Kerioth is captured, and the strongholds are seized; and the heart of the mighty men of Moab in that day shall be like the heart of a woman (ishah) in her pangs.
And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because against YHWH he has magnified himself.
Terror and pit and snare are upon you, O inhabitant of Moab, declares YHWH.
He who flees from before the terror shall fall into the pit, and he who comes up out of the pit shall be caught in the snare; for I will bring upon her, upon Moab, the year of their visitation, declares YHWH.
In the shadow of Heshbon the fugitives stand without strength; for a fire has gone forth from Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and it has devoured the corner of Moab and the crown of the head of the sons of tumult.
Woe to you, O Moab! The people of Chemosh have perished; for your sons are taken in captivity, and your daughters into captivity.
And I will restore the fortunes of Moab in the latter days, declares YHWH. Thus far is the judgment (mishpat) of Moab.
