1But now, hear, I pray, Job, my words, and give ear to all my words.
2Behold now, I have opened my mouth, my tongue has spoken in my palate.
3The uprightness of my heart is my sayings, and the knowledge of my lips, they utter purely.
4The spirit (ruach) of God made me, and the breath (neshamah) of Shaddai gives me life (chai).
5If you are able, answer me; set in order before me, stand forth.
6Behold, I am toward God according to your mouth; I too was pinched off from the clay.
7Behold, my terror shall not frighten you, and my pressure upon you shall not be heavy.
8Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the voice of your words:
9'I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me.
10Behold, He finds occasions against me, He counts me as an enemy to Him;
11He puts my feet in the stocks, He watches all my paths.'
12Behold, in this you are not righteous, I will answer you: for God is greater than man.
13Why have you contended against Him, that He answers none of His words?
14For God speaks in one, and in two, though one does not perceive it.
15In a dream, a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men (ish), in slumberings upon the bed,
16then He uncovers the ear of men (ish), and seals their instruction,
17to turn man (adam) aside from his deed, and to hide pride from man.
18He keeps back his soul (nephesh) from the pit, and his life (chai) from passing by the sword.
19And he is reproved with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with constant strife;
20and his life (chai) loathes bread, and his soul (nephesh) desirable food.
21His flesh (basar) is consumed away from sight, and his bones that were not seen are laid bare.
22And his soul (nephesh) draws near to the pit, and his life (chai) to the destroyers.
23If there is for him a messenger, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to declare to man (adam) his uprightness,
24then He is gracious to him and says, 'Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.'
25His flesh (basar) becomes fresher than a child's; he returns to the days of his youth.
26He prays to God and He accepts him, and he sees His face with a shout of joy; and He restores to man his righteousness.
27He looks upon men (ish) and says, 'I have sinned and perverted what was right, and it did not profit me.'
28He has redeemed his soul (nephesh) from passing into the pit, and his life (chai) shall see the light.
29Behold, all these things God works, twice, three times, with a man,
30to bring back his soul (nephesh) from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living (chai).
31Attend, Job, hearken to me; be silent, and I will speak.
32If you have words, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you.
33If not, you, hearken to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom."
