And the word of YHWH came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying:
"Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against it; for their wickedness has come up before my face."
And Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from before YHWH; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; and he gave its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, from before YHWH.
And YHWH hurled a great spirit (ruach) onto the sea, and there was a great tempest on the sea, and the ship thought to be broken.
And the mariners feared, and cried out each man (ish) to his god, and they hurled the vessels that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it from upon them. But Jonah had gone down to the innermost parts of the vessel, and lay down, and was fast asleep.
And the chief of the sailors came near to him, and said to him: "What is to you, O sleeper? Arise, call to your God; perhaps God will give thought to us, that we perish not."
And they said each man (ish) to his fellow: "Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil is upon us." And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
And they said to him: "Tell us, please, on whose account this evil is upon us; what is your work, and from where do you come? what is your land, and of what people are you?"
And he said to them: "I am a Hebrew; and YHWH, the God of the heavens, I fear, who made the sea and the dry land."
And the men (ish) feared a great fear, and said to him: "What is this you have done?" For the men (ish) knew that he was fleeing from before YHWH, because he had told them.
And they said to him: "What shall we do to you, that the sea may be quiet from upon us?" for the sea was going and storming.
And he said to them: "Take me up and hurl me into the sea, that the sea may be quiet from upon you; for I know that on my account this great tempest is upon you."
And the men (ish) rowed hard to return to the dry land, but they could not, for the sea was going and storming against them.
And they cried to YHWH, and said: "We beseech you, O YHWH, let us not, please, perish for the soul (nephesh) of this man (ish), and do not lay upon us innocent blood; for you, O YHWH, as you desired, you have done."
And they took up Jonah, and hurled him into the sea; and the sea stood still from its raging.
And the men (ish) feared YHWH a great fear, and they sacrificed a sacrifice to YHWH, and vowed vows.
