And it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and had utterly destroyed it — as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king — and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,
that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men (ish) were mighty.
And Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piram king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying:
"Come up to me and help me, and let us smite Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel."
And the five kings of the Amorite gathered themselves together and went up — the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon — they and all their camps; and they encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.
And the men (ish) of Gibeon sent to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, saying: "Do not slacken your hands from your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorite who dwell in the hill-country are gathered together against us."
And Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.
And YHWH said to Joshua: "Do not fear them; for into your hand I have given them; not a man (ish) of them shall stand before you."
And Joshua came upon them suddenly; all the night he went up from Gilgal.
And YHWH discomfited them before Israel, and smote them with a great smiting at Gibeon, and pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them as far as Azekah and as far as Makkedah.
And it came to pass, as they fled before Israel — they were at the descent of Beth-horon — that YHWH cast down upon them great stones from the heavens as far as Azekah, and they died; more were they who died from the hailstones than those whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.
Then Joshua spoke to YHWH, in the day when YHWH gave the Amorite before the children of Israel; and he said in the eyes of Israel: "Sun, in Gibeon be still; and Moon, in the valley of Aijalon."
And the sun was still, and the moon stood, until the nation avenged itself of its enemies. Is it not written upon the book of Jashar? And the sun stood in the midst of the heavens, and did not hasten to go down about a whole day.
And there was no day like that, before it or after it, that YHWH listened to the voice of a man (ish); for YHWH fought for Israel.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
And these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.
And it was told to Joshua, saying: "The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah."
And Joshua said: "Roll great stones to the mouth of the cave, and appoint over it men (ish) to guard them.
And you, do not stand; pursue after your enemies, and attack their rear; do not allow them to enter into their cities, for YHWH your God has given them into your hand."
And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had finished smiting them with a very great smiting, until they were consumed — and the survivors who survived of them entered into the fortified cities —
that all the people returned to the camp, to Joshua at Makkedah, in peace; no one sharpened his tongue against the children of Israel, against any man (ish).
And Joshua said: "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out to me these five kings out of the cave."
And they did so, and brought out to him these five kings out of the cave — the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.
And it came to pass, when they brought out these kings to Joshua, that Joshua called to all the man (ish) of Israel, and said to the captains of the men (ish) of war who had gone with him: "Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings." And they came near and put their feet upon their necks.
And Joshua said to them: "Do not fear, and do not be dismayed; be strong and be courageous; for thus YHWH will do to all your enemies against whom you fight."
And afterward Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them upon five trees; and they were hanging upon the trees before(ad עד) the evening.
And it came to pass at the time of the going of the sun, that Joshua commanded (tzivvah), and they took them down from the trees, and cast them into the cave where they had hidden themselves; and they put great stones upon the mouth of the cave, until this very day.
And Makkedah Joshua captured on that day, and smote it with the mouth of the sword, and its king; he utterly destroyed them and every soul (nephesh) that was in it — he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
And Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and fought against Libnah.
And YHWH gave it also, and its king, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the mouth of the sword, and every soul (nephesh) that was in it — he left none remaining in it; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
And Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish; and he encamped against it, and fought against it.
And YHWH gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day, and smote it with the mouth of the sword, and every soul (nephesh) that was in it, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
And Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Lachish to Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it.
And they captured it on that day, and smote it with the mouth of the sword; and every soul (nephesh) that was in it on that day he utterly destroyed, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron; and they fought against it.
And they captured it, and smote it with the mouth of the sword, and its king, and all its cities, and every soul (nephesh) that was in it — he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; and he utterly destroyed it, and every soul (nephesh) that was in it.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it.
And he captured it, and its king, and all its cities; and they smote them with the mouth of the sword, and utterly destroyed every soul (nephesh) that was in it — he left none remaining; as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and to its king, and as he had done to Libnah and to its king.
And Joshua smote all the land — the hill-country, and the Negev, and the lowland, and the slopes — and all their kings; he left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed every breath (neshamah), as YHWH, the God of Israel, commanded (tzivvah).
And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen, even to Gibeon.
And all these kings and their land Joshua captured at one time, because YHWH, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
