And it came to pass, when all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, that YHWH said to Joshua, saying:
Take for yourselves from the people twelve men (ish), one man (ish), one man (ish) from each tribe,
and command (tzivvah) them, saying: Take up for yourselves from here, from the midst of the Jordan, from the place where the feet of the priests stood firm, twelve stones, and you shall carry them over with you, and you shall lay them down in the lodging-place where you lodge tonight.
And Joshua called the twelve men (ish) whom he had prepared from the children of Israel, one man (ish), one man (ish) from each tribe.
And Joshua said to them: Pass over before the ark of YHWH your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each man (ish) lift up for himself one stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel,
so that this may be a sign (ot) in your midst, when your children ask tomorrow, saying: What are these stones to you?
then you shall say to them: That the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant (berit) of YHWH; when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off; and these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded (tzivvah), and they took up twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan, as YHWH spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the lodging-place, and laid them down there.
And twelve stones Joshua set up in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the covenant (berit) stood; and they are there to this day.
And the priests bearing the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that YHWH commanded (tzivvah) Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses commanded (tzivvah) Joshua; and the people hurried and passed over.
And it came to pass, when all the people had finished passing over, that the ark of YHWH passed over, and the priests, before the people.
And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spoke to them;
about forty thousand armed of the host passed over before YHWH for battle, to the plains of Jericho.
On that day YHWH magnified Joshua in the eyes of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life (chai).
And YHWH said to Joshua, saying:
Command (tzivvah) the priests bearing the ark of the testimony (edut), that they come up from the Jordan.
And Joshua commanded (tzivvah) the priests, saying: Come up from the Jordan.
And it came to pass, as the priests bearing the ark of the covenant (berit) of YHWH came up from the midst of the Jordan, as soon as the soles of the priests' feet were drawn up to the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and went over all its banks as before.
And the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth of the first month, and they encamped in Gilgal, at the eastern edge of Jericho.
And those twelve stones which they took from the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal.
And he said to the children of Israel, saying: When your children ask their fathers tomorrow, saying: What are these stones?
then you shall make known to your children, saying: On dry land Israel passed over this Jordan,
for YHWH your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you until you passed over, as YHWH your God did to the Sea of Reeds, which He dried up from before us until we passed over,
so that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of YHWH, that it is mighty; so that you may fear YHWH your God all the days.
