1And all the people gathered as one man (ish) to the broad place which was before the gate of the waters; and they said to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the Torah of Moses, which YHWH commanded (tzivvah) Israel.
2And Ezra the priest brought the Torah before the assembly, from man (ish) to woman (ishah), and all who could understand in hearing, on the first day of the seventh month.
3And he read in it before the broad place which was before the gate of the waters, from the light until the middle of the day, in front of the men (ish) and the women and those who understood; and the ears of all the people were toward the book of the Torah.
4And Ezra the scribe stood upon a tower of wood which they had made for the matter; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Uriah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, Meshullam.
5And Ezra opened the book before the eyes of all the people — for he was above all the people — and when he opened it, all the people stood up.
6And Ezra blessed YHWH the great God; and all the people answered, "Amen, Amen," with the lifting up of their hands; and they bowed down and prostrated themselves to YHWH with faces to the ground.
7And Yeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the Torah; and the people stood in their place.
8And they read in the book, in the Torah of God, explained; and they set the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
9And Nehemiah — he is the Tirshatha — and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites who caused the people to understand, said to all the people, "This day is holy to YHWH your God; do not mourn, and do not weep." For all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the Torah.
10And he said to them, "Go, eat the fat things, and drink the sweet things, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for the day is holy to our Lord (Adonai); and do not be grieved, for the joy of YHWH is your stronghold."
11And the Levites quieted all the people, saying, "Be still, for the day is holy; and do not be grieved."
12And all the people went to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words which were made known to them.
13And on the second day were gathered the heads of the fathers of all the people, the priests and the Levites, to Ezra the scribe, even to gain insight into the words of the Torah.
14And they found written in the Torah, which YHWH commanded (tzivvah) by the hand of Moses, that the sons of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast (chag) in the seventh month.
15And that they should proclaim and cause a voice to pass through all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, "Go out to the mountain, and bring olive leaves, and leaves of the oil tree, and leaves of myrtle, and leaves of palms, and leaves of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written."
16And the people went out, and brought, and made for themselves booths, each man (ish) upon his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the gate of the waters, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.
17And all the assembly who had returned from the captivity made booths, and dwelt in the booths; for the sons of Israel had not done so from the days of Yeshua the son of Nun until that day. And there was very great joy.
18And he read in the book of the Torah of God day by day, from the first day until the last day. And they made a feast (chag) seven days; and on the eighth day a solemn assembly, according to the judgment (mishpat).
