1And YHWH spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent (ohel) of appointed time (moed), on the first of the second month, in the second year of their going out from the land of Egypt, saying:
2"Lift up the head of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, every male, head by head;
3from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host in Israel, you shall number them by their hosts, you and Aaron.
4And with you there shall be a man for each tribe, a man who is head of the house of his fathers.
5And these are the names of the men who shall stand with you: For Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur.
6For Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.
7For Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab.
8For Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar.
9For Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon.
10For the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.
11For Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni.
12For Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
13For Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran.
14For Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel.
15For Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan."
16These were the called ones of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.
17And Moses and Aaron took these men who were designated by names.
18And they assembled all the congregation on the first of the second month, and they declared their births by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head.
19As YHWH commanded (tzivvah) Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.
20And the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
21those numbered of them, for the tribe of Reuben, were forty-six thousand and five hundred.
22For the sons of Simeon, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, those numbered of him, by the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
23those numbered of them, for the tribe of Simeon, were fifty-nine thousand and three hundred.
24For the sons of Gad, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
25those numbered of them, for the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26For the sons of Judah, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
27those numbered of them, for the tribe of Judah, were seventy-four thousand and six hundred.
28For the sons of Issachar, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
29those numbered of them, for the tribe of Issachar, were fifty-four thousand and four hundred.
30For the sons of Zebulun, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
31those numbered of them, for the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty-seven thousand and four hundred.
32For the sons of Joseph, for the sons of Ephraim, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
33those numbered of them, for the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred.
34For the sons of Manasseh, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
35those numbered of them, for the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty-two thousand and two hundred.
36For the sons of Benjamin, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
37those numbered of them, for the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty-five thousand and four hundred.
38For the sons of Dan, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
39those numbered of them, for the tribe of Dan, were sixty-two thousand and seven hundred.
40For the sons of Asher, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
41those numbered of them, for the tribe of Asher, were forty-one thousand and five hundred.
42The sons of Naphtali, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host;
43those numbered of them, for the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand and four hundred.
44These are those numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, twelve men; one man each was for the house of his fathers.
45And all those numbered of the sons of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host in Israel;
46and all those numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.
47But the Levites, by the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them.
48And YHWH spoke to Moses, saying:
49"Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, and their head you shall not lift up among the sons of Israel;
50but you, appoint the Levites over the tabernacle (mishkan) of the testimony (edut), and over all its vessels, and over all that belongs to it; they shall bear the tabernacle (mishkan) and all its vessels, and they shall minister to it, and around the tabernacle (mishkan) they shall encamp.
51And in the journeying of the tabernacle (mishkan), the Levites shall take it down; and in the encamping of the tabernacle (mishkan), the Levites shall set it up; and the stranger who draws near shall be put to death.
52And the sons of Israel shall encamp, each man by his camp, and each man by his standard, by their hosts.
53But the Levites shall encamp around the tabernacle (mishkan) of the testimony (edut), so that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the sons of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge (mishmeret) of the tabernacle (mishkan) of the testimony (edut)."
54And the sons of Israel did according to all that YHWH commanded (tzivvah) Moses; so they did.
