1My son, if you have become surety for your neighbor, have struck your hands for a stranger,
2you are snared by the words of your mouth, you are caught by the words of your mouth.
3Do this then, my son, and deliver yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor: go, humble yourself, and importune your neighbor.
4Do not give sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.
5Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6Go to the ant, O sluggard; see her ways and be wise,
7which, having no commander, officer, or ruler,
8prepares her bread in the summer, gathers her food in the harvest.
9How long, O sluggard, will you lie down? When will you arise from your sleep?
10A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to lie down,
11and your poverty will come like a wayfarer, and your want like a man (ish) with a shield.
12A man (adam) of worthlessness, a man (ish) of iniquity, walks with crookedness of mouth,
13winking with his eyes, scraping with his feet, pointing with his fingers,
14perversities in his heart, devising evil at all times; he sends out discord.
15Therefore suddenly his calamity will come; in an instant he will be broken, and there is no healing.
16Six things there are that YHWH hates, and seven are an abomination of His soul (nephesh):
17haughty eyes, a tongue of falsehood, and hands shedding innocent blood,
18a heart devising thoughts of iniquity, feet hastening to run to evil,
19a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sends out discord among brothers.
20Keep, my son, the commandment (mitzvah) of your father, and do not forsake the Torah of your mother.
21Bind them upon your heart continually; tie them about your neck.
22When you walk, it will lead you; when you lie down, it will watch over you; and when you awake, it will talk with you.
23For the commandment (mitzvah) is a lamp, and the Torah is a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life (chai),
24to keep you from the woman (ishah) of evil, from the smoothness of the tongue of a foreign woman.
25Do not covet her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelids.
26For on account of a harlot woman (ishah) one comes to a loaf of bread, but the wife (ishah) of a man (ish) hunts for the precious soul (nephesh).
27Can a man (ish) snatch fire into his bosom and his garments not be burned?
28Or can a man (ish) walk upon the coals and his feet not be scorched?
29So is he who goes in to the wife (ishah) of his neighbor; none who touches her will go unpunished.
30They do not despise a thief if he steals to fill his soul (nephesh) when he is hungry,
31yet if found, he must repay sevenfold; all the wealth of his house he must give.
32He who commits adultery with a woman (ishah) lacks heart; he who would destroy his own soul (nephesh), he does it.
33Wounds and dishonor he will find, and his reproach will not be wiped away.
34For jealousy is the fury of a man; and he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35He will not regard any ransom, nor will he consent though you multiply the bribe.
