1A Song of the Ascents, of David. Unless YHWH had been for us — let Israel now say —
2unless YHWH had been for us, when man (adam) rose up against us,
3then they would have swallowed us up alive (chai), when their anger burned against us;
4then the waters would have overwhelmed us, the torrent would have passed over our soul (nephesh);
5then the proud waters would have passed over our soul (nephesh).
6Blessed be YHWH, who did not give us as prey to their teeth.
7Our soul (nephesh) has escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped.
8Our help is in the name of YHWH, Maker of heaven and earth.
