To the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah. A Maskil.
O God, with our ears we have heard, our fathers have recounted to us a work You worked in their days, in the days of old.
You, with Your hand, dispossessed nations and planted them; You did evil to peoples and sent them out.
For not by their sword did they possess the land, and their arm did not save them; but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your face, for You favored them.
You are He, my King, O God; command (tzivvah) the salvations (yeshuah) of Jacob.
Through You we push down our adversaries; through Your name we trample those who rise against us.
For not in my bow do I trust, and my sword does not save me.
For You have saved us from our adversaries, and those who hate us You have put to shame.
In God we have boasted all the day, and Your name forever we will praise. Selah.
Yet You have cast us off and humiliated us, and You do not go forth with our hosts.
You make us turn back from the adversary, and those who hate us plunder for themselves.
You give us like sheep for food, and among the nations You have scattered us.
You sell Your people for no wealth, and You did not increase by their prices.
You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and a derision to those around us.
You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.
All the day my disgrace is before me, and the shame of my face has covered me,
from the voice of the one who reproaches and reviles, from before the enemy and the avenger.
All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten You, and we have not dealt falsely with Your covenant (berit).
Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps turned aside from Your path,
though You have crushed us in the place of great sea-creatures (tannin) and covered us over with the shadow of death.
If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our palms to a strange god,
would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.
For for Your sake we are killed all the day; we are reckoned as sheep for slaughter.
Awake! Why do You sleep, my Lord (Adonai)? Rouse Yourself! Do not cast off forever.
Why do You hide Your face, forget our affliction and our oppression?
For our soul (nephesh) is bowed down to the dust (aphar); our belly cleaves to the earth.
Arise as a help for us, and redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.
