1A Psalm of Asaph. The Mighty One, God, YHWH, has spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun to its going down.
2Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God has shone forth.
3Our God comes and does not keep silence; a fire before him devours, and around him it storms mightily.
4He calls to the heavens above, and to the earth, to judge his people:
5Gather to me my faithful ones, those who cut my covenant (berit) over sacrifice.
6And the heavens declare his righteousness, for God, he is judge. Selah.
7Hear, my people, and I will speak; Israel, and I will testify against you: God, your God, am I.
8Not for your sacrifices do I reprove you; and your burnt offerings are before me continually.
9I will not take a bullock from your house, nor he-goats from your folds.
10For mine is every living thing (chai) of the forest, the cattle upon a thousand hills.
11I know all the birds of the mountains, and the wild beasts of the field are with me.
12If I were hungry, I would not tell you; for mine is the world and its fullness.
13Do I eat the meat (basar) of bulls, or drink the blood of he-goats?
14Sacrifice to God thanksgiving, and pay to the Most High (Elyon) your vows.
15And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall honor me.
16But to the wicked God says: What have you to declare my statutes (chuqqim), and to take up my covenant (berit) upon your mouth?
17And you, you hate instruction, and cast my words behind you.
18When you saw a thief, you were pleased with him, and with adulterers was your portion.
19Your mouth you let loose in evil, and your tongue frames deceit.
20You sit and speak against your brother; against the son of your mother you give slander.
21These things you did, and I kept silence; you thought that I would be altogether like you. I will reprove you, and set it in order before your eyes.
22Understand this now, you who forget God, lest I tear in pieces, and there be none to deliver.
23He who sacrifices thanksgiving honors me; and to him who sets his way aright I will show the salvation of God.
