1After these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and he entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and said to break them open to himself.
2And Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that his face was set for the battle against Jerusalem,
3and he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were outside the city; and they helped him.
4And much people were gathered, and they stopped all the fountains and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying: "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?"
5And he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it upon the towers, and outside another wall, and strengthened the Millo of the city of David, and made weapons in abundance and shields.
6And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them to him into the open place of the gate of the city, and spoke to their heart, saying:
7"Be strong and be courageous; do not fear nor be dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for with us is more than with him.
8With him is an arm of flesh (basar), but with us is YHWH our God, to help us and to fight our battles." And the people leaned upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
9After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem — and he was before Lachish, and all his dominion with him — against Hezekiah king of Judah, and against all Judah that were in Jerusalem, saying:
10"Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: On what are you trusting, that you remain in the siege in Jerusalem?
11Is not Hezekiah inciting you, to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying: YHWH our God will deliver us from the palm of the king of Assyria?
12Is it not this same Hezekiah who removed His high places and His altars, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, saying: Before one altar you shall bow down, and upon it you shall burn incense?
13Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands at all able to deliver their land from my hand?
14Who among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed was able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand?
15And now, do not let Hezekiah deceive you, nor incite you in this way, and do not believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people from my hand and from the hand of my fathers; how much less shall your God deliver you from my hand?"
16And his servants spoke yet more against YHWH the God, and against Hezekiah His servant.
17And he wrote letters to revile YHWH the God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying: "As the gods of the nations of the lands, which did not deliver their people from my hand, so shall the God of Hezekiah not deliver His people from my hand."
18And they called out with a loud voice in the Judean language against the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to make them afraid and to terrify them, so that they might capture the city.
19And they spoke against the God of Jerusalem as against the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of the hands of man (adam).
20And Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried out to the heavens.
21And YHWH sent an angel, and he cut off every mighty man of valor, and leader, and prince in the camp of the king of Assyria. And he returned with shame of face to his land, and he entered the house of his god, and there those who came out of his own bowels felled him with the sword.
22And YHWH saved (yasha) Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria, and from the hand of all, and guided them on every side.
23And many were bringing a gift to YHWH to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; and he was exalted in the eyes of all the nations from then onward.
24In those days Hezekiah was sick to the point of death; and he prayed to YHWH, and He spoke to him and gave him a wonder (mofet).
25But Hezekiah did not return according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was lifted up; and there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
26But Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the wrath of YHWH did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
27And Hezekiah had riches and honor in great abundance; and he made for himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all kinds of desirable vessels;
28and storehouses for the produce of grain, and new wine, and oil; and stalls for every kind of beast, and herds for the folds.
29And he made for himself cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God gave him very much substance.
30And he, Hezekiah, stopped the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down to the west of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his work.
31And so with the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder (mofet) that was done in the land — God left him, to test him, to know all that was in his heart.
32And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his kind deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, upon the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
33And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
