Thus my Lord (Adonai) YHWH showed me; and behold, he formed locusts at the beginning of the coming up of the latter growth; and behold, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.
And it came to pass, when they had finished eating the herb of the land, that I said, "My Lord (Adonai) YHWH, forgive, I pray; how shall Jacob stand? for he is small."
YHWH relented concerning this. "It shall not be," said YHWH.
Thus my Lord (Adonai) YHWH showed me; and behold, my Lord (Adonai) YHWH called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and would have devoured the portion.
Then I said, "My Lord (Adonai) YHWH, cease, I pray; how shall Jacob stand? for he is small."
YHWH relented concerning this. "This also shall not be," said my Lord (Adonai) YHWH.
Thus he showed me; and behold, my Lord (Adonai) stood upon a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.
And YHWH said to me, "What do you see, Amos?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then my Lord (Adonai) said, "Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will not again pass over them any more.
And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword."
Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words.
For thus Amos has said, 'Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely go into exile from his ground (adamah).'"
And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee for yourself to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there;
but at Beth-el you shall not again prophesy any more, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house."
Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, "I was no prophet, nor was I a prophet's son; but I was a herdman, and a gatherer of sycamore figs.
And YHWH took me from following the flock, and YHWH said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'
And now hear the word of YHWH. You say, 'You shall not prophesy against Israel, and you shall not drop words against the house of Isaac.'
Therefore thus says YHWH, 'Your wife (ishah) shall be a harlot in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your ground (adamah) shall be divided by line; and you yourself shall die in an unclean ground (adamah), and Israel shall surely go into exile from his ground (adamah).'"
