Thus my Lord (Adonai) YHWH showed me; and behold, a basket of summer fruit.
And he said, "What do you see, Amos?" And I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then YHWH said to me, "The end has come upon my people Israel; I will not again pass over them any more.
And the songs of the temple shall wail in that day, declares my Lord (Adonai) YHWH; many shall be the corpses; in every place they are cast out. Hush!"
Hear this, you who pant after the needy, and to cause the poor of the land to cease,
saying, "When will the new moon pass, that we may sell grain? and the Shabbat, that we may open out wheat? — making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying balances of deceit;
that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals, and sell the refuse of the grain?"
YHWH has sworn by the pride of Jacob, "Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.
Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one that dwells in it mourn? And all of it shall rise up like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt.
And it shall come to pass in that day, declares my Lord (Adonai) YHWH, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the day of light.
And I will turn your feasts (chagim) into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and its end like a bitter day.
Behold, days are coming, declares my Lord (Adonai) YHWH, that I will send a famine in the land — not a famine for bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the words of YHWH.
And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro to seek the word of YHWH, and shall not find it.
In that day shall the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst,
those who swear by the guilt of Samaria, and say, "As your god lives (chai), O Dan," and, "As the way of Beer-sheba lives (chai)" — they shall fall, and not rise again.
