And YHWH spoke to Moses, saying:
"Sanctify to me every firstborn, the opener of every womb among the sons of Israel, among man (adam) and among beast; it is mine."
And Moses said to the people, "Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, from the house of slaves; for by strength of hand YHWH brought you out from this place; and no leavened bread shall be eaten.
This day you are going out, in the month of Abib.
And it shall be, when YHWH brings you to the land of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, which he swore to your fathers to give to you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall serve (avad) this service (avodah) in this month.
Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day is a feast (chag) to YHWH.
Unleavened bread shall be eaten the seven days; and no leavened bread shall be seen with you, and no leaven shall be seen with you, in all your borders.
And you shall tell your son in that day, saying, 'It is because of this which YHWH did for me when I came out from Egypt.'
And it shall be for you for a sign (ot) upon your hand, and for a memorial between your eyes, so that the Torah of YHWH may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand YHWH brought you out from Egypt.
And you shall keep this statute (chuqqah) at its appointed time (moed) from days to days.
And it shall be, when YHWH brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as he swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you,
that you shall cause to pass over to YHWH every opener of the womb; and every firstling, the offspring of a beast which shall be yours, the males, are to YHWH.
And every firstling of a donkey you shall redeem with a sheep; and if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. And every firstborn of man (adam) among your sons you shall redeem.
And it shall be, when your son asks you tomorrow, saying, 'What is this?' that you shall say to him, 'By strength of hand YHWH brought us out from Egypt, from the house of slaves;
and it came to pass, when Pharaoh hardened himself against sending us out, that YHWH killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of man (adam) to the firstborn of beast. Therefore I sacrifice to YHWH every opener of the womb, the males; and every firstborn of my sons I redeem.'
And it shall be for a sign (ot) upon your hand, and for frontlets between your eyes; for by strength of hand YHWH brought us out from Egypt."
And it came to pass, when Pharaoh sent the people out, that God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, although it was near; for God said, "Lest the people repent when they see war, and return to Egypt."
And God led the people around, by the way of the wilderness of the Sea of Reeds; and the sons of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt.
And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him; for he had surely sworn the sons of Israel, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you."
And they journeyed from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, at the edge of the wilderness.
And YHWH was going before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them the way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give light to them, to go by day and night.
The pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, did not depart from before the people.
